      just a question

      hi, just a question.

i have found out that my parents live 1.90km from exchange. dependent on attenuation, noise margin, snr, and crc errors, etc, would it be possible for them to go on to 16mb sky max with ADSL2+?

1st start with 8mb G.DMT, then after 3 days ask to move into 16mb adsl2+ mode, then check the connection as it take 10 days to settle??

      Re: just a question

If you visit DSL ZoneUK - Distance to exchange DslZone forum you need to enter your post code and it will then tell you your distance from the exchange.

I'm 1.06 kilometres from my exchange and I get the maximum possible upload and download.

      Best of luck.

      Regards.

      Re: just a question

I assume you got this from an online checker, like SamKnows, this only gives you straight line distance to the exchange. The true line length, which is what counts, could be 2-3 times the straight line distance, or even more. In my case the checker says 1.66K, but my actual line length is 3.54K.

      Re: just a question

plus they also live in Bridgend, like I do, but i am 720 meters away from exchange, and they are 1.90 kilometres away from exchange.

so you say 1.06km away, realist, so should you get a maximum upload download speed at 1.90km distance?

plus they are still on plusnet 8mb? at 4mb speed, due to distance from exchange, plus plusnet's speed is crap anyway, they should be able to get 8mb no problem at that distance?

even get 16mb on ADSL2+? of course depending on attenuation, SNR + noise margins + crc errors.

      Re: just a question

If they are 1.9km away 'as the crow flies' then you need to AROUND double it or more.

The line is going to be at least 3km long, if 1.9km is 'as the crow files. What you really need to do is get thier current attenuation and see what it's like.

If it's any more than 40dB then I would not see any point in moving them to ADSL2+

      All the best, Doug.

Well try it and see, sky will tell you on the phone if its possible and they will also let you know your possible speeds.

Go for it you have nothing to loose.

Unless their internal wiring is faulty and can be fixed, they are very unlikely to get anything like 16mbs. Plusnet's 8mbs is the same system as Sky Connect, ie ADSLMax. I can't really agree with you that Plusnet's speeds are bad. I moved from Plusnet to Sky Connect initially; and my speed was in the same range, 4500 to 5000kbps. On Mid now, I get a maximum of 6900kbps. I don't think your parents would do any better than this and may get about 10,000 on Max. Sky's speed checker is not too accurate, most find that they do much better than they are told, so don't believe what they say on the phone. If you can get the Attn and SNR from their existing router, you will get a better idea.
