Question 72 hour wait after activation?

My broadband line went live yesterday, however this morning I still couldn't connect. Sky technical support said I have to wait up to 72 hours after activation for my line to start 'accepting' the ASDL signal. Is this right or were they just rying to brush me off?

What actually happens during this 72 hours?

Re: 72 hour wait after activation?

It is possible that all the work at the exchange may span across a couple of days rather than being completed in one go. The 72 hours quoted is probably just to cover all reasonable eventualities. Most people find there's no more than a couple of hours between activation and connection.

Ah, so I guess I just have to be patient. I think it was activated late last night (it wasn't active at 6pm) so hopefully it will all work today...

Re: 72 hour wait after activation?

In most cases it will be Sky's own systems that have the delayed reaction.

When I migrated, I had a green light on the router, however the username and password built into the router couldn't log on to Sky's network. Apparently it can take up to 3 days to activate as it can sometimes take BT a little while to inform Sky that the job has been done.

When you say you had a green light, was it the internet light? The only lights I get are the power and LAN port ones.

Re: 72 hour wait after activation?

If Sky are responsible for a delay, you will get a BB Sync light and in the router log an error to the effect of CHAP Error.

Canterbury is LLU anyway, so there may be a problem at the Exchange (at the very worst).

Re: 72 hour wait after activation?

Still no connection this morning, no BB light on the router and no message in the router other than disconnected. I plugged my 3Com router in last night and it said that the current line status was 'QUIET1'.

I got an automated message (from BT I assume) on my phone at 6:30pm saying that my line was now activated and to enjoy using the new service!! I'm starting to get annoyed about this now as Sky won't even begin to start looking into the problem until at least 3 working days have passed and i'm sure there must be something wrong with my line (installed about 3 weeks ago at a cost of 130!)

Re: 72 hour wait after activation?

Ah. In your first post when you said you "went live" I wrongly assumed that you meant your router was syncing with the exchange i.e. it was picking up an ADSL signal.

I don't wish to appear as a Sky apologist but I have some sympathy for them. BT own and control the exchanges. Sky are totally dependent on the BT engineers to do their thing and are no doubt constrained from chasing them by the service agreement in place which probably gives a 3 day window.

Looks like you'll have to wait.

Re: 72 hour wait after activation?

I guess I worded it wrong, but I did phone Sky on Wednesday night and they said my line was active, and then the message from BT last night saying it was active has led me to believe there must be some sort of fault preventing me from accessing it, as the sync light isn't coming on a supposedly active line...

It's mostly being in the dark that’s frustrating, I just want to know what’s going on and when it will actually work, at the moment it could be tonight (seems unlikely) or 2 weeks or a month!

Sorry for ranting, just have to get this off my chest

      I don't think you're ranting. You're justifiably frustrated .

Sometimes BT screw up as do Sky but that's fairly rare. Chances are that this will all come right in a day or so. I hope you aren't one of the unlucky few where this takes a lot longer.
