      Slow Download Speeds

      HI ALL!

I'm new to the forum and new to Sky Broadband all together, so please be gentle!!!

I installed my new 8MB Sky broadband last wednesday and although browsing the net runs smoothly my download speed is pathetic.

I was on Virgin media before on the 4MB package and there were no speed issues at all.

Now, I am running it wirelessly and I know this would have an affect on the dl speed but from various bits of information I have read this should only slow it down by a maximum of 10%

Average download speed I am getting is 200-250 KBPS, surely if i'm paying for 8MB i should be receiving at least 4000 KBPS? (again, I know there are various factors involved and people very rarely get the max speed)

I did a broadband speed test and it said I was receiving 1.3MB broadband.

I have phoned Sky a couple of times but basically they have told me let the line settle, but its been five days and if anything its got slower.
+ half the time the person on the other end of the line barely speaks english.

Any help / suggestions would be great????

      Re: Slow Download Speeds

A noise margin of 15.1 is too high, which explains the slow downloads.

Turn the router off for a moment, then turn it back on. Go back to your router stats page and check the noise margain again; if it is over 8-9 then you need to repeat it again and again until it is below 9. Ideally it should be about 7. Once it's around 7-8 then surf the web for a while, try downloading some stuff... see the improvements! Once you have a nice noise margain try to not reboot the router so that it 'settles'...

      Hope this helps

      Re: Slow Download Speeds

you want to post the detailed stats, but from that we can see you're connected at 7MB but could quite easily achieve close to 16MB if you were on the Max package...

a noise margin that high is good!! shows line can happily take more (hence my comment about getting near 16MB if on Max)

If my noise margin EVER gets above 12 my connection is totally unusable, so imo, this is not correct.

I Have Turned My Router Off A Few Times Only This Evening And The Noise Level Never Seems To Change.

Where did you read that? That's completely ridiculous. A very poor wireless connection could give you effectively 0% throughput.
