Universal Plug and Play - Universal Plug and Play - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basically it's just a method that lets devices connect to a computer or network easily.

Which would be useful if it had been implemented properly in the Sky firmware -- which, apparently, it wasn't. Result, intermittent disconnections which end when you switch off UPnP.

      Re: what does uPnP do?

After reading this I guess I must be one lucky fella. 60 days now without a disconnection and I've just realised UPnP has been turned on throughout this period. Thinking back I know know why I didnt have to assign a static ip for utorrent to work correctly - UPnP takes care of this.

Me too, I have been running for months with it enabled and have had no problems. It is strange how it effects some routers and not others.

It affected me but not my flatmate -- her computer is near to the router and wireless connection was much better that mine which is at the limits of range. The symptoms were ON/OFF connection repeatedly at start-up, settling if left for five minutes. Problem went away permanently when I turned off UPnP.
