      Information on Ping

      Hi I could someone explain to me how you find out if you have a high or low ping? Also I have had it explained to me what Ping is and from what I can understand it means the lag, is this correct? Also are there any ways to help lower the Ping if its high and what is the average Ping for people on the Mid package, as thats what I am on?

      Thanks in advance

      Re: Information on Ping

      Yes, you could describe Ping as lag. It's the latency in your connection and is a measure of the amount of time (in milliseconds) for a specific piece of data to be acknowledged by the server you've sent it to.

      To test your ping you need to "ping" a server. bear in mind that the results you get are specific to that server so measure one that matters to you. A good benchmark might be skyuser.co.uk or if you're a gamer then jolt.co.uk.

      To ping either of these (or any address) open a DOS window (start/run/cmd/enter) and type "ping skyuser.co.uk" (without the quotes) and hit return. You'll get something like the following:

      Pinging skyuser.co.uk [85.10.136.226] with 32 bytes of data:

      Reply from 85.10.136.226: bytes=32 time=34ms TTL=119
      Reply from 85.10.136.226: bytes=32 time=112ms TTL=119
      Reply from 85.10.136.226: bytes=32 time=34ms TTL=119
      Reply from 85.10.136.226: bytes=32 time=131ms TTL=119

      Ping statistics for 85.10.136.226:
      Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
      Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
      Minimum = 34ms, Maximum = 131ms, Average = 77ms

      In this case, as you can see, for some reason the server isn't consistently fast tonight.

      Re: Information on Ping

      Hi thanks for that very quick reply I have just tried doing the test on the sky user website and these were the results:

      Pinging skyuser.co.uk [85.10.136.226] with 32 bytes of data:

      Request timed out.
      Reply from 85.10.136.226: bytes=32 time=80ms TTL=119
      Reply from 85.10.136.226: bytes=32 time=80ms TTL=119
      Reply from 85.10.136.226: bytes=32 time=81ms TTL=119

      Ping statistics for 85.10.136.226:
      Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 3, Lost = 1 (25% loss),
      Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
      Minimum = 80ms, Maximum = 81ms, Average = 80ms

      Is this good or bad?

      Thanks

      For normal surfing it's fine. 80 milliseconds is less than a 10th of a second. In other words an undetectable lag.

      For serious gamers, some would consider that too slow.

      Re: Information on Ping

      Well I do play on xbox live quite a bit. Is there anyway to improve it? I have read on these forums that some people have contacted sky T3 to improve it?

      Thanks

      Re: Information on Ping

      Do you think if I just send them an e-mail then they might be able to do it? Also what do I exactly need to ask, is it just if they can lower my Ping on my connection?

      Thanks

      you can use the web form for tech support (see my sig).

      See thread Low Pings WITHOUT Fastpath!!! on what you need to ask for.
