New Sky BB Max - G.DMT capped 4576 - help needed pls

      Hi folks,

I'm a new Sky BB MAX service user. I've had the service about 10 days. From a wired PC, Broadband Max speed check said:
      • Date of Speed Test: 2007-08-05 01:51:34
      • Download Speed: 3886 kbps (485.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
      • Upload Speed: 508 kbps (63.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

      Sky netgear router says:
      • ADSL Downstream = 4576kbps / Upstream = 768kbps
      • Line Attenuation Downstream = 41.0db / Upstream = 25.5db
      • Noise Margin = 7.1db / Upstream = 13.0db

I'm at the Reading exchange here, which is ADSL2+ capable: The Broadband Resource

DSL ZoneUK - Distance to exchange puts me 1Km from the Exchange as the crow flies.

Getting detailed stats - gives me this:

/usr/sbin/adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime Channel: INTR, Upstream rate = 768 Kbps, Downstream rate = 4576 Kbps

With the stats above - am I getting the speed you'd expect from the connection? Should I be contacting Sky to try and get more out of the connection, or should I be switching back to MID and saving 5 pcm seeing as I'm not getting more than 8MB anyway?

      Any help appreciated!

Re: New Sky BB Max - G.DMT capped 4576 - help needed pls

ur on gdmt, thats obvious - its whether or not the line is caped or set to 8MB (which it prob is) and it just sync at 4.5MB......as for downgrading, is my underatsnding u can't unless its a technical issue (not because u want to save money - having said that, no harm in trying)

Re: New Sky BB Max - G.DMT capped 4576 - help needed pls

As stated above you are on G.DMT and not ADSL2+. You can get sky to change you to ADSL2+ where you should get between 8 and 10mb on a good line.

To make sure you have the best results you should have the router plugged into the test socket behind the master socket faceplate to see your best possible speed. If you are currently plugged in a different way and when you move to the test socket the speed increases, it means your internal wiring has problems and needs to be looked at. Firstly by removing any wires from terminal 3 on all your sockets.

      @alistain

No, you're not capped (other than you're on G.DMT). If your sync was capped your noise margin would be much higher as would your max rate be as reported in your stats.

You're only syncing at 4576kbps because (probably) your line is noisy. See the cabling and faceplate help forum for info on diagnosing and fixing line noise problems.

Switching to ADSL2+ will not improve your sync until you have a relatively noise free line. Even then, with an attenuation of 41db (on G.DMT), ADSL2+ is probably not going to give you a faster, more stable connection than G.DMT will.
