Question Restricted Access to Web Sites

Can anyone help please - Since installing Sky Broadband I have been unable to use Internet Explorer (no big deal as I use Firefox anyway) or anything that requires two way traffic - i.e. Updating my Road Angel, Google Earth, Itunes database and now (more seriously)my renewal code for Kaspersky Anti-virus.
Each time I get "Access Denied" which seems to suggest my firewall is blocking them, however all are set to allow access and the same thing happens when I turn the firewall off (Zone Alarm free version).

I did not have these problems before Sky and have not changed any settings.

      Thanks.

Did you have a router before?

If so, what was the IP address for that (ie was is also 192.168.0.1). If it was different, then it does sound a firewall issue.

I know you say you have disabled the FW, but I had a similar problem with Norton and disabling norton didn't help, but when I updated the IP address in Norton and rebooted it was all fine.

Not saying this is the resolution, but it may be.

      Hi,

Didn't have a router before. I had an ADSL modem.

Sounds like a Dns Problem, did you have to set up any Dns ip addresses with your previous provider?

Sorry for the delay in replying - Thanks for the suggestion, but no I didn't have to change any DNS settings. I only had to install a Speedtouch Modem

Re: Restricted Access to Web Sites

Unless you have made changes to the default settings, which is unlikely, the router will not stop you connecting to any of these sites.

It is more likely to be your settings in IE. Have you installed IE7? If so, the default settings in this are more severe than IE6. Go to Tools>Internet Options> on the Security Tab, make sure the Setting for the Internet Zone is set to Medium High, also check on the Privacy tab that it is set to Medium. On both these, you can set trusted sites which will always be allowed access.

      Thanks for the suggestion.
I have installed IE7 and have the security and privacy settings lower than you suggest.
I am not too worried about not being able to use IE as firefox works OK. It is the sites which I require to access the internet separately from a browser (e.g. Google Earth, Kaspersky Activation Server, Itunes) that don't work.

Re: Restricted Access to Web Sites

What happens when you try to access these sites through the browser ie

      Google Earth

      Kaspersky's Site

Do you have the Kaspersky Security Suite or just the AV. The former also includes a firewall, which may need configured. At the moment I can't think of anything except a firewall which would stop these connecting, especially as you are able to use a browser

Our computer has Kaspersky Internet Security 6. I use Firefox and the wife uses IE. We have no access issues at all, with either.

Re: Restricted Access to Web Sites

I have had another thought on this. There are virus/trojans which stop you connecting to sites, AV in particular. You could try running a full scan for virus and download and run TrojanHunter it may turn something up.
