      Please help with my speed

      Hello all,

this is my first post as I have just become a new Sku User.

I'm on the Mid package and have been informed by BT and Sky, the due to my location my download speed would only be around 3meg.

However, my problem is that I cannot get near a 1 meg connection nevermind a 3 meg.

I've checked my cabling in my apartment and plugged the router in to the BT Master socket to ensure nothing is causing a problem. The uptime is short because I had just restarted the router but the ADSL Link info is petty much exactly how it always us.

Here are my stats from the router:

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 2680 3540 0 1166 5200 00:09:47
      LAN 10M/100 4258 3627 0 5095 1377 00:11:19
      WLAN 11M/54M 644 174 0 232 9 00:11:09

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 896 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 60.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 6.8 db 14.0 db

      Any help would be great.

      Thanks

Re: Please help with my speed

Looking at your line attenuation figure of 60dB a c. 1Mbs speed seems the best you will get, it also suggests you are several km from your exchange - which is quite a lot.

The noise margin at 6.8dB suggests your line speed has been adjusted up to tolerate as much noise as it can. That's the bad news, however you may find the line is better optimised by the exchange over the next few days.

      Downstream Attenuation

0-42 dB - 2Mbps (strictly adhered to wef Aug 2005)
      43-60 dB - 1Mbps
      > 60 dB - 512kbps

Re: Please help with my speed

As the crow flies I'm 'only' 2km from my exchange.

Is this likely to be my 'lot' ??

I'm still within the Sky cooling off period so if the problem is sky related I'll cancel.

Am i best attempting to speak to Sky to try to address this??

I was hoping for something like 2meg when the BT engineer said to me that my line should be able to handle 3meg.

Where have you got those? They look like the old BT 2meg service figures

the problem as 'crow flies' means that your actual line length could be at least double that! it might go ALL round the houses before it gets to you (which obviously has an adverse affect on BB speeds)

posting full stats would prob halp a bit with diagnoses

Whilst 60db is a high attenuation (equating to a long line of ~4.3km) it will support up to 3meg if the line is relatively noise free.

You are connecting at just 896kbps which is a quarter of this. Chances are the shortfall is down to line noise. Most times line noise is generated within the home phone wiring e.g. extensions and line splitters are bad news for a good ADSL connection. Please see the cabling and faceplate help forum for info on diagnosing and fixing line noise issues.

So, don't give up just yet. Whilst you may not see the full 3meg I'd be surprised if you can't get near it.

reference your question Saturday; you are absolutely right those figures are a bit dusty - posted in a bit of a hurry.
