Max BB Package - only getting 2meg speeds

Hi there, my line was activated only an hour ago. Thus, I set up my router and connected to sky internet hassle free. Now, Im supposed to be on 16mb MAX broadband however when I run speed tests(and download things) I'm getting whats expected of 2meg.

Is this something that will change over the next few days or some kind of mistake with Sky?

      Thanks.

Has your exchange been unbundled? Have you tried connecting directly to your master socket? You probably need to post your full router stats too.

Nothing obviously wrong with your stats (your sync is excellent).

My first guess would be that you're connecting wirelessly and this is the problem.

Re: Max BB Package - only getting 2meg speeds

According to that lot, and I own up to not understanding it much at all, you're connected at the full on maximum possible speed. If you're not seeing it at the test sites it could be that you're using an extension lead? I get 14Mb at the master socket but only 6Mb at the end of my extension - which is a bit of a b#@$% as it's hard wired and under new(ish) plaster so there's nothing to be done about it here.
Try from the back of your master socket and see what you get, hopefully, somebody who knows will be along to help out more.

Edit: there you go, Saturday's arrived early, if he can't help, nobody can.

Re: Max BB Package - only getting 2meg speeds

I am connecting via two desktops. One connecting wirelessly and the other through the ethernet cable provided. Both computers have similar speeds of 2/2.5mb

Is that really your 'phone number you're showing under "exchange"? You might want to remove it if so.......

Re: Max BB Package - only getting 2meg speeds

Your router is syncing at ~16meg so that's not the problem.

There are several possible reasons for slow throughput such as:
      • a poor wireless connection (apparently not in this case)
      • a slow/overloaded test server (try this one)
      • incorrect TCP/IP settings (see the second sticky in my signature)
      • gross line errors (your stats don't cover long enough to show the true error level)
      • malware utilising bandwidth
      • another user using bandwidth on the LAN (or even a wireless hijack)
      • miscellaneous hardware problems such as network card, cabling etc

If it is none of the above then don't worry just yet. One or two people have found that their speeds were initially low when first connected but picked up after a few hours. Rebooting the router may help.

Re: Max BB Package - only getting 2meg speeds

Wouldn't you consider a 12.5meg download speed good?

That's just about the maximum for a 16meg connection.
