Angry Signal drops out - Help please

      Hi,
I have been on sky broadband for a couple of weeks. Every time I go on line the signal decreases from an initial 54.0Mbps to 1.0Mbps (as indicated on my connection icon at the bottom right of the screen). Obviously at this point I i get the dreaded "cannot display page" message. If i then right click the wireless icon mentioned previously an click repair the process begins eventually after a few actions a recieve amessage saying "DNS cache cannot be cleared". At this point the signal is generally restored to 54Mbps and I am able to continue browsing. Only for the whole thing to drop out again after about 15 minutes. I have already taken some advice from the forum (changed from Sky servers to openDNS) but the problem persists. I have installed a system mechanic package which improved the initial performance which was even worse when i first swapped to sky. I was previously with BT without any problems. I am using the same lap top as I was with BT and I am on xp. I am not veryb technically able but would appreciate any advice from more knowledgable users. Frustration is rising by the minute!

      Many thanks

Re: Signal drops out - Help please

The problem you describe has nothing to do with your router stats but possibly your router (wireless) performance.

In a nutshell, your laptop is struggling to receive an adequate strength and quality of signal. This isn't all that unusual. Wireless can be a problem and there are a few things you can try to improve things.

First off experiment with the router position and aerial orientation. You may find that moving it just a couple of feet makes all the difference, especially off the floor and away from any electrical/metal items.

Next, try changing wireless channel in the router. This can be done by accessing the router admin pages (for access details see the first sticky in my signature).

      PS. Your stats are fine.

Re: Signal drops out - Help please

It is greyed out when auto108 is set as mode. Change this to g (assuming your adaptor supports this - otherwise g&b) and you'll be able to change channels then.

If you can detect other wireless networks in range then choose a channel as far away from them as possible, otherwise start at 13 and move down trying each one to see it there's a difference.
