No connection on laptop unless desktop PC is hardwired.

Had no end of trouble. Firstly I can't connect to the internet on my toshiba vista laptop unless the LAN port of the router is connected to my desktop PC. Even if this desktop PC is not turned on! This can't be right can it? Now I can't get connected to the internet at all. Sky say that it's a problem with BT. However the phone line works okay. Any help for a newbie appreciated. Thanks

      two things really

      1. Try plugging your lappy into one of the lan ports on your router if this work tell me
      2. I think its a conicidence that the lan port is connecting and your lappy starts to work

Sounds to me like you have set up a shared connection throught the desktop. However if that was the case it would also work if the desktop was connected wirelessly.

It could be right if the LAN cable is acting as an aerial. Are you close to the transmitter?
