      Specific lookup and ping failures

Here's a swine of a problem that I'm having, and the phone support was of no use at all (as I'll explain).

I have found - along with the usual teething problems with switching ISP - that some lookups are unstable. Whilst I can happily look at any number of sites, there are a few that around 40% of the time just timeout on me... and once they begin to time out, they stay that way for quite a while - even tho the connection is still up and I can get to other pages.

The worst case of this, however, is the couple of sites where this failure is permanent. Here's one example:
      66.180.126.101 ~ erain.com

I log into the router here (from one of two machines, with differant setups and OS's), and try and ping it from there, and I get 100% packet loss, and am unable to access this site.

At the same time I'm doing this, I'm online, and talking to people who CAN access the site. I've even nipped to my neighbours house with my laptop, and accessed it via their net with no problems. But on the sky BB, I just can't access it at all. Nada. And this has been the case since I went live. (And OFC I've tried the usual power offs)

And the support call I placed... well, I explained the above and was told, in order:

      (1) It's because of Vista
      (2) It's because of my windows config.
      (3) That the problem was with my computer.
(Getting mad here and had to again very slowly explain about the fact the R-O-U-T-E-R couldn't make the ping, and that I was using multiple machines)
      (4) That I needed to turn off the router for 40 mins and call someone else back tomorrow if it didn't work.

Anyone encountered anything similar? (fault wise)

[EDIT] I guess this is maybe the same thing as http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/servi...-work-you.html ? Should I be adding the sites onto there?

Im having similar problems but yours is prolly more related to this:

      Slow page loading times

      I've posted on this thread:

Problems in last 3days, VERY slow speeds, and high pings

Re: Specific lookup and ping failures

I am having similar problems since last Friday. Although 50% of websites work fine, I cannot connect to the other 50%. The problem is on two computers with different set-ups and it is NOT a computer problem. Somewhere along the line the routing is getting lost.

Technical support tried to blame Firewalls, McAfee, Windows etc, but finally they are referring it to their Team Leader and I should get an answer in 5 working days. Great...

Problem websites include BBC - homepage - Home of the BBC on the Internet, Orange webmail, Google, eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace...

Can anyone help? How can you speak to someone in Tech support about the Network side of things?

just to let you know, as you're on Connect there will be next to nothing we can do other than pass it to BT (as you run through their hardware)

personally, you should be able to ping BBC as they have a ping server but wouldnt be able to help with the others. sorry!!

that's just bogus. I was on BT with my previous 2 ISPs, and no problems with the sites.

Re: Specific lookup and ping failures

Sky have had some routing problems in the past but I thought they had gone away. In any case that problem never affected Connect customers as it is a rebadged BT service and doesn't use much of Sky's network.

Couple of things: first off you need to flush your DNS cache (sorry not a Vista user so can't advise how) as those sites will be stored as unavailable - again don't know how long Vista does this for by default. Second, in case it's a simple Sky DNS server problem, I'd recommend using another DNS server pair such as Open DNS which are possibly more reliable.

If those two things don't help then this may: Try cycling through assigned ip addresses until you get one that's not affected. The easiest (but laborious) way to do this is to use the Sky Test button in the router admin pages. Each time you run this you should see your ip address increment by two. Again, I know this works for Sky LLU but as I'm not a Connect customer I can only guess it will for you.

Re: Specific lookup and ping failures

The DNS cache on the pcs has no bearing on the problems the router is having.

I've obtained new IP addresses for the router a few times, and ONCE, in a few days of pokeing at this, I was able to access the site I needed to. And only for 2 minutes at that.

Re: Specific lookup and ping failures

The problems you describe don't sound like a router problem to me. They're typical of routing or DNS issues.

A little less aggression to people trying to help you would also be appreciated. IAmNotTheEnemy correctly pointed out you are on Connect and so are using BTs exchange equipment and primarily their network.

I don't think that I am being agressive.

I do think it is a DNS problem, because the DNS information in the router isn't getting the job done, and I'm currently looking at adding another DNS into the router, specifically this one : 194.164.6.112 ... anyone know how?
