      Sky max connection help..

      Hey everyone.

I have spent the last week reading lots of different posts on this forum about everything associated with sky broadband.(and what good reading it was too)

But i am at a loss as to what to do about my connection ( i am a network novice so its all new to me so please be gentle)

I have a max connection and am just wondering why my downstream is so poor

Connection Speed 5664 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 45.0 db 26.5 db
Noise Margin 10.9 db 14.0 db

i am 1.2 km away from the exchange (Darlington) and from what i have read i should be getting better speeds.I do know for a fact that the downstream was at 7908 at the weekend but seems to have dropped down to 5664.

I run my router through an extension lead from my main BT box (which is my only one in the house). Also i have my extension plugged into the master socket as when i used the normal one my speeds were about half.

any help and guidance will be gratefully appreciated

When you say "master Socket" do you mean the test socket which is behind the faceplate? If not, then that is the first thing to try.

Were your stats obtained with the router plugged into your test socket via an extension lead? If so, what is the approximate length of the lead, and what sort of cable is it?

IF its using an extention, remove this completely as it will more than likely give false/bad readings...

      Re: Sky max connection help..

Well unfortunately my BT socket is 4 metres from my desk so i need to run an extension lead. Its also the only BT box in the house
I guess this is a bad thing ?
Its just a bog standard phone extension reel.the router is in one socket and my phone in the other (via the micro filters).

I started reading about cables and faceplates but i got stumped quite quickly

Although it might create some short term inconvenience, it would be well worth you testing the effect of connecting as follows:-

Filter plugged into test socket, router and phone plugged into filter, and nothing else connected. In other words eliminate the extension. If you don't have a wireless-equipped computer this might mean you have to temporarily re-site your computer nearer to the master socket. If you can do this, post your stats again after browsing the internet for an hour or so. This should help to indicate whether your extension cable is making a significant contribution to the problem.

      Re: Sky max connection help..

Those type of extension cables tend to be very poor quality cable and is probably the cause of the very high CRC errors showing in your stats which is almost certainly causing your speed issues. Firstly you need to plug your router directly into the main test socket to see if the problem improves, If so you have courses of action.

1: wire a proper extension for your computer using an extension socket and proper twisted pair cable which is available from Maplin, Screwfix, Wickes B&Q etc. It is very easy to wire in only a matter of connecting 2 wires at either end, pins 2 and 5 in the extension socket and 2 and 5 in the master socket.

2: Position the router next to the main socket and run an ethernet cable from the router to the computer, they are available in various lengths and wont generate noise like telephone extension cables.
