      Can't connect to the internet or the router

      MY friend has Sky Broadband. He has only had it for about 4 days and has suffered problems with it since the start.

      He could connect intermitently but now cannot connect at all.

      I went round and cleared a load of crap off his PCs such as viruses and spyware.

      I can't seem to connect to the internet at all, I simply get page cannot be displayed errors. Everything is connected fine, cables, filters etc. I've run through all the obvious stuff and so called Sky.

      They went through the usual crap suggestions and then I was cut off. I've tried to connect to the router directly but not joy.

      In his system tray it does show a lan connection of 100mbs... I have right clicked it and asked it to repair and get the error:

      The following steps of the repair operation failed:

      Renewing the IP address

      PLease contact etc etc...

      Any suggestions please?

      I think establishing a wired connection to the router so you can go to its setup page should be the first step.

      How are you trying to connect to the router - sky default address is 192.168.0.1 - has your friend perhaps changed this??? If got messed up somehow suggest reset router using the reset button by the power line and strarting again.

      Hi, thanks for the response...

      It is a wired connection via ethernet to the router. I cannot access the router via 192.168.0.1 and I think it unlikely my friend could have changed it at all...

      The router has been reset and also powered off for ten minutes and still no joy...

      Bit out of my depth I'm afraid. Someone clever will be along soon I'm sure.

      I'm (almost) sure a reset should restore the default router address so its puzzling why your PC can't see it? (it is possible to identify a router's address by using a network analyser -eg ethereal- but surely this shouldn't be necessary).

      Maybe the router is crap - what about trying another one? - Sky Netgear if poss but another make if needs be (edit - realised the non-sky router idea wasn't thought through as you'd need to extract your logon details from the Sky router which is not possible without effective communication - another Sky one should be alright though even with different logon I believe).

      Just another thought - is the PC connection set to "get IP address automatically" if not maybe its looking in the wrong place.

      If you are using a firewall ie Norton you have to go into personal firewall and get it to recognise the ethernet port, if not norton try turning firewall off as some can be stopping the pc from connecting to it, see if it allows you to connect it may even be some other firewall related software. When you say got rid of virus are you sure thats not still affecting it ?

      I fairly sure the viruses are all clear. There is no firewall on the system at present and the PC is set to automatically accept the IP and DNS...

      I had the same problem and was told to switch off the computer, reset the router and as the computer was booting up again, unplug the router for a minute and then plug it back in. That worked.

      Ive had the same problem just in the last few days. Have to reboot my mac and restart the router each time. Could this be some sort of issue?
