Good page loading times, poor connection speed (Bournemouth area)

      Hi all.

I have just been connected to the connect package after being with Virgin Media for the last 5 years. I was on the 4meg package with virgin & got DL speeds of about 350kbps. I am on the 8meg package with Sky & get DL speeds of around 100kbps. However, the page load speeds seem to be better than with Virgin.

The problem I have is that I want to be able to download video & mp3 & the download speed is poor to say the least. I will upgrade to the Max package as soon as it's available, but realistically, how much quicker can I expect it to be? Will the Max package be using a different exchange, or will they simply increase the potential bandwidth to my connection? I'm tempted to go back to virgin if this is anything to go by. I think Sky should make it more transparent that you are only going to achieve 8meg speeds if you're living next door to the exchange & have brand new cables leading to your house.

The speed on ADSL is very much dependent on the condition of your line i.e. the amount of noise on it and your distance from exchange. Unlike cable where much of the network is fibre optic based so I am told. Anyway if you have poor line you wont achieve no where near 16mb on Max, thats why they sell it as "up to" 16mb.
A good starting point would be to extract your detailed router stats using the proceedure below and post them here, then me or someone else will try to pick the bones out of them and tell you what you might expect.

Go to the utility web site: Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4 Click the “Get” detailed modem stats button and click “OK”.
Enter the router login user name and password.
At the next screen, click the back button on your browser.
      Click the “Download” netgear.cfg button.
What you do next depends on your operating system. On Windows XP, click the “Save” button to save the file to your hard disk. (If you click “Open”, you may find that the file association is one that doesn’t handle carriage returns the same way as the router, hence the reason for saying “Save”.)
Open the file in WordPad (not notepad).

Your have a far amount of CRC errors, I would try the test socket behind the face plate of your master socket assuming you have an NTE5 master. See if things improve there.
