      Advice needed please!!!!!!!!!

      Hi guy's
I've been connected to sky broadband on the Mid speed for a few month's now with not too many problems,my connection speeds are ranging from 2-5 mbs which i'm happy enough with as i was paying NTL 18 a month for 2 mbs, the thing is i do suffer dropouts at different times through out the day sometimes not at all,i've now set up a wireless network so my daughter can use her laptop upstairs in her bedroom i'm going through an ethernet cable from the router to my desktop computer, the laptop speed is around 1-3 mbs which i thought was pretty good as it's through wireless, the thing is i'm in a different room to my BT main box so at the moment i'm running two joined normal bt extensions to reach me in the other room, now i know this is not ideal and since joining this forum i've discovered that maybe i should be using a cat5e cable? or should i put the router next to the bt box and use a long ethernet cable? can you help?? i've downloaded my router stats if this helps

      Many thanks in advance
      scott

      Re: Advice needed please!!!!!!!!!

Your line errors are pretty bad but not catastrophic. Enough to give you some instability, possibly slowish downloads but I'm surprised they're enough to give you frequent disconnections - errors at that level normally take several days to mount up before the connection gets sluggish and eventually fails. I wonder if you are suffering from the UPnP "bug". As a precaution, turn it off in your router admin pages and see if that reduces or eliminates the disconnections.

Yes, extensions are bad news and two joined together more than double so. Ideally you should have a replacement filtered faceplate fitted to your master socket and the router plugged into this. Then each computer should be connected to the router by ethernet cable. This will give you the best possible connection.

When you say "connection speeds are ranging from 2-5 mbs" do you mean download speed? Even allowing for your error levels with a router sync of 8096kbps you should be getting ~6500kbps downloads. Is this when you are connected wirelessly? If so that could be the issue. In any event, have a look at the second sticky in my signature at the bottom of this post for changes you can make to each PCs settings which may improve things (if it is simply a wireless issue then this won't help).
