When do I ask for MAC Code?

      Hi,
I have recently signed up with Sky, but don't want it installed until July 14th, so when do I ask Orange for my MAC Code?
I need to give Orange 1 moth cancellation, not too fussed about over running, but just not sure when to get it from Orange.
I presume that once I have my MAC Code, I will still be able to use my Internet from Orange until Sky Set me up?

So Sky set me up 14th July (when Dish is installed) or after then?

      Thanks for help,

      Steve

Re: When do I ask for MAC Code?

Orange MAC codes rarely, if ever, allow us to migrate - you'll be told that the only way to migrate is to cease orange and order Sky BB when the line is clear - in total, you'll be without internet for 15-20 days.

This makes a mockery of the Migration Authority Codes, I am surprised Oftel hasn't taken action.

Re: When do I ask for MAC Code?

Not being a pesimist here but I've got a friend who was with Orange, was fed up and asked for their Mac. They had a bit of trouble trying to get it but Ornage may have changed their ways by now.

It's your rights to have this code and Orange will be breaking the law if they don't hand it over within-I think-4 days, that's working days.

I've just finished with Pipex this afternoon , got my MAC and have ordered Sky Mid range, all this afternoon. I was told by Pipex that the MAC is usable for one month after issue so you have one month in which to fully make your mind up.
As far as I know if you don't get issued with the MAC BT will think the line has to be closed so will do that.
If you're not wanting the new connection till 14th July, I'd ring Sky and ask about dates (advise etc) and probs then ring Orange to cancel it. Its my belief Orange has to keep the line open via BT till sky have activated it from their end.

I was dreading trying to get the mac from Pipex as I'd heard rotten stories, but they weren't any bother so you could well be ok.

      Good luck anyway

Re: When do I ask for MAC Code?

Its not an issue at orange's end - the macs they supply are simply incompatible with our own systems, and any orders placed with BT will be rejected - it could have been fixed by now, which is why we always try mac code's once, but usually a rejection follows 2-3 days later...

Re: When do I ask for MAC Code?

Well, received a letter from Sky yesterday saying that my install was 16th July,so i contacted them because when I signed up 14th was agreed, anyway 14th Not avail, so have moved it forward to Sun 8th July.
Talked to the Broadband folk, first of all the told me sooner I give them MAC Code the better, but don't cancel Orange yet..Then they said get MAC Code 2nd July, Orange are allowed to take upto 5 days to give this and may do so via e-mail or post, So I then give the mac code to Sky @6th July ish they do something with BT and I should be good to go @ 20th July, all very confusing, I think I will Cancel Orange now and get my MAC code at the same time, looks like I will be without broadband for a while anyway..such is life.

Re: When do I ask for MAC Code?

Talked to Orange last night, they asked how we would like to receive the MAC Code, we told them e-mail, they said we should have it in 3 to 4 days, we then give that to Sky and Orange said that they would liaise with Sky to ensure that we don't go without broadband if possible, don't quite believe that , but we will see..

Re: When do I ask for MAC Code?

I picture issues coming with this one....

chances are the following will happen (maybe not though)...

Your order for Sky will go through before the Orange has cancelled, you'll then contact tech support who'll initially say connection completed on X of July and will run a tone test (which will fail). you'll then inform us that you Orange wasn't cancelled by the time the Sky went active and it'll need a cease and reprovide....

This, of course, may not happen - but I've seen it happen a LOT in these circumstances so I wouldn't pin your hopes on an easy crossover. For our sake, I hope it does!!!!

A bit late replying to this but *quote> TSx Orange MAC codes rarely, if ever, allow us to migrate - you'll be told that the only way to migrate is to cease orange and order Sky BB when the line is clear - in total, you'll be without internet for 15-20 days.

Weird cause i migrated from Orange to Sky, obtained a MAC code, gave it to Sky and it went smoother than a new born babys bum
