      Help with speed

      Hi,

I had a fault with a noisy BT line yesterday which seems to have cleared this morning. Though I can now connect, my download speed has dropped considerably to about 16kb/s.

My stats don't seem too bad - see below:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4320 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 30.0 db
Noise Margin 3.2 db 22.0 db

Is there anything I can do to make my downloads better? I was getting 400kb/s+ before.

      Many thanks for any advice.

      Re: Help with speed

Okay I just realised that my noise margin is quite bad.

Just rebooted my modem and got this:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3744 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 30.0 db
Noise Margin 5.8 db 22.0 db

It's still downloading at 16kb/s at the moment though.

      Re: Help with speed

Okay, lost my phone line for 2 days. There was a fault at the telephone poll. I've just rebooted this evening and got the following stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5280 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 47.0 db 29.0 db
Noise Margin 6.5 db 22.0 db

I'm still only getting 16kb/s though. Can my connect package have untrained itself as it was connected to a bad telephone line for a while?

If so, do I just need to keep rebooting to get it back up again?

Have you tried plugging into the test socket behind your master socket? If not, try that and then post your full stats.

      Re: Help with speed

Plugged into the test socket with just a microfilter with nothing else connected:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5408 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 47.0 db 29.0 db
Noise Margin 6.3 db 22.0 db

These stats look better than I used to get for my location. I normally get around 400kb/s downloads.

      Stats for 18th February 2007:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4704 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 28.0 db
Noise Margin 6.4 db 23.0 db

      Still only getting 16kb/s.

Should I call Sky to see if some kind of limit has been imposed somewhere due to the amount of failed connection attempts my PC probably did before I discovered the problem with my phone line?

      Re: Help with speed

It would be more useful if you can post your detailed stats. (Connect via test socket for at least ten minutes, then using Mognuts utility click "Get detailed modem statistics", follow the instruction about using back button, then click "Download Netgear Config File" and open using Wordpad).

Where abouts do you live? I think i'm having the same problem as you, since my noise margin has gone real low in the past couple of days.

      Re: Help with speed

      Ramsgate exchange.

I couldn't use my telephone as the noise was so bad on the line. Wife was in for the engineer when he came, but she said that our line had been damaged by the cap on the telephone pole outside our house.
