so you have to buy your own wireless card/dongle i would recomend a card though

Whats the advantage of a wireless card over a wireless dongle then.

Mainly i would say the reception, due to the fact that the PCI card has a better aerial so to speak.

However todays technology has greatly improved and i am sure either will do the job

All USB "dongles" draw current from the USB root hub. Unfortunately the request for current can be greater than that available, particularly if another host powered device is plugged into an adjacent port e.g. webcam or scanner. The transfer of data is not as "clean" on USB adapters either, and more packets need to be resent than with PCI. Go PCI, but try and obtain an adapter with a cabled antenna rather than a fixed one which may become shielded behind your PC (this is one of the advantages of USB adapters, they can be moved around to improve signal).

Tks NewsreadeR - the only disadvantage that came to mind regarding the wirleless dongle is that it uses up one of your usb ports whereas the card doesnt.

On the other hand a PCI card uses up one of your PCI slots, but a USB one doesn't .

Engineer came around today, he told me I was the first in my town. He had a manual with him and was using that all the time.

I used a really old laptop to install the sky software (which brands IE and creates shortcuts, this stuff is not neccessary).

After that he could not really do much as I knew more than him and logged into the router when he was reading the manual. I cant connect yet until my line is activated on the 23rd. So he left me to it.

There is no option to input username its all done via the MAC address of the router. Its custom firmware but very much the same as the original, there is an option to upgrade the firmware. Also firewall rules are all available port forwarding etc. You can change SSID name and key.
The password for the router is sky.

I'll have to wait until Wednesday and I'll give you more info when I'm finally connected.

Oh I did not get a free wifi card

Is there a label under the router with a MAC Address on it?

      Edit - Today? Sunday?

I've put it back in the box

But I do remember that its SKy branded at the front, says Netgear on one side and the other side has the SSID and Access Key.

The MAC key is on the cardboard box and on the router home page. This was the number the enigineer gave to Sky and is linked to me and my phone line.

I asked him about cloning but he looked a bit dazed.
