      Is the sky router defective?

      Hi all,

Just posing a question that may have ben already asked....

      Is the Sky router defective?
I know netgear is a 'bona-fide' system provider .But! the router supplied with your internet connection has Skys own software installed. So the question Im asking is it defective?Maybe to Skys advantage? ie.dropping off, slow page download, speed variation.
Basically its not doing what it says on the box.
All threads on this forum relate to the above topics. So is this the answer to why so many people have so many problems not associated with other ISP's?
      Just a thought!

      Regards
      Dean

Re: Is the sky router defective?

Answer is simply NO. All the sky firmware does is make it harder for joe public to use other hardware with sky broadband. Although you can re-flash your sky router with the netgear original, it appears most people have found it to have made no difference. I myself tried my 3com router with my sky broadband and found it to be much worse (in terms of sync) than my nice new sky router.

If you have a problem then it is more likely to be a problem with your 1. internal wiring, 2. BT line, 3. Sky being stupid.

The only proven defect in the Sky firmware is in the UPnP which in our case and many others caused intermittent disconnections. These ceased when UPnP was disabled.

There are no reports of this with the retail DG834GT on Netgear's user forum, as far as I know.

      Mine is not defective.
I have had it over 8 months and it has never gone wrong.
I have however, followed the advice given on this site.
      Switch off UPnP.
      Change the password.
Stand it vertically, use the supplied feet.
Do NOT use the Sky disc, software and McAfee.

I only use it hard wired and for security switched wireless off.
I switch my computer system, including the router, off at night.
(This is a controversial decision on this site.)

From posts on Skyuser there are some defective units as
      Sky have replaced them free.

I am not sure that many routers have been defective. There are many cases where a router has been replaced only for the user to find that the old one 'works'. There is one case where the user has been sent 4 routers, it would be statistically impossible for all these to be defective. I think at the moment, support is so bad, that it is easier to send out a new router rather than try to find out what is really wrong. Rich though they may be, the time must come when Sky will stop giving out replacement routers like sweets at Christmas.
