What to look for in an exchange

      Hey guys,

Ive been looking at you all talking about exchanges etc etc, and all these codes (i personally have no clue, im in the process of switching at the moment from Virgin Media (£180 refund expecting from them, 3months and counting))

So i looked at DSL ZoneUK and there distance meter, which pulled up some info about my exchange

      >> Beulah Hill Exchange
      >> Enabled: 16/01/2000
      >> Code: LSBEU
      >> Region: London
      >> Postcode: SE19 2QW

Is that good news or bad news for me, been looking at getting the Broadband Max package, and was looking to see weather its worth me going for it, if im not going to receive anywhere near 16mb

So basically my question is, is my exchange capable of outputting a full 16mb connection (yes i understand the further away you are from it, the less im likely to get etc etc)

Re: What to look for in an exchange

I guess that's your exchange details - what's important is your distance from the exchange, which isn't necessarily as the crow flies. If you can find out your downstream line attenuation (dB) and signal to noise ratio (SNR) - maybe seen as DS margin - from your current connection, there are a couple of web site below which may give you a rough idea of what speeds you should be able to achieve, both on ADSL & ADSL2+

      DSL ZoneUK

ADSL and ADSL2+ Line Capability Estimator

I'm on mid and the estimations I got before I was connected are pretty close to what I'm syncing at and the speeds I'm getting

      Hope it helps.

Thanks for your help, but im on Virgin Media at the moment, so i guess im just going to have to wait and find out, the DSL Zone says im 640meters away from the exchange (as crow flies) so i should expect quite good, but dont bank on getting 16mb kinda thing :-P

      Thanks for your help anyway

@oxy - you ned to check if your exchange has been unbundled by any of the llu providers to get 16 meg. Upto 8 meg is available via most providers at many exchanges but is just bt's product resold. If you check your exchange on The Broadband Resource it will tell you if any of the llu providers have unbundled your exchange - sky (easynet), be and bulldog seem to be the most prolific

Re: What to look for in an exchange

this link here should give you info on your exchange

for what I can see is that it is enabled for Sky LLU and at 640 meters you may get the full 16Mb (line length is usually about 20 - 50% longer than crow flies)

Re: What to look for in an exchange

The Broadband Resource Yep your exchange is LLU enabled so you have the choice of all Sky packages, so its all down to distance from exchange quality of line etc.

Re: What to look for in an exchange

      This is from BT:

      For Postcode SE19 2QW

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial check on your postcode indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps.

Our check also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 6.5Mbps up to 8Mbps.

Basically u can get mid as far as BT are concerned. It's unbundled and sky has LLU and with ur distance yeah u should be able to get about 14-15meg
It doesn't get better than this band lol
