      PLEASE HELP..BBand running so slow!!!!!!

      Hi all,

Please could you lend a helping hand!! Having been told I could get 8Mb bband through Sky I left Tiscali. Imagine my disgust when finding out my speeds range from 356kbps - a max of 1.465mb (according to vaious speedcheckers and downloaded progs). Oh wait you don't have to imagine 'cause most of you share my pain!!!

It's painfully slow and my hair is getting painfully thin as I rip tufts out on a daily basis! I'm not 'computer literate' so please translate any gems you wish to share into understadable lingo for me

      My stats are:

Re: PLEASE HELP..BBand running so slow!!!!!!

you have errors on your stats m8 and ur SNR (dB): 4.7 is too low should be about 7 or more

have you tried to connect via the test socket?? here it is incase u don't know where it is

      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/view-master.html

when u try the test socket try not to use a extension and reboot ur router after you have connected to the test socket surf the net and do some downloading then repost your stats with router in test socket

Ok folks here are the three modem tests I did tonight...the 1st one was wireless, 2nd was plugged into wall and using ethernet table and the 3rd was plugged into the main socket and using ethernet table. I'd appreciate your replies and thanks in advance!

Coupled with yesterday's results, I hop that these can help you to help me!!

Any ideas why my connection is snail-paced? If it helps you guys to cross-reference, I have also posted this topic here: rockforum.co.uk - The place to discuss notebooks and laptops in the UK

Re: PLEASE HELP..BBand running so slow!!!!!!

      Hi,

Firstly run TCPoptimizer ( google search for it ) it helps with lost connection speeds by changing lan/ip settings and mtu sizes. ( doesn't hurt your pc dont worry ).

      If that does not work.

you are on connect which is a bt ipstream product and not run by sky ( you only pay sky the subscription but your on the bt network ) this can be for 2 reasons.

      1. your exchange is not LLU enabled yet and you are awaiting it to be LLU enabled in which case when it is you will be put on the sky network.

      2. You chose connect as your broadband option ( paying either 17pm or 5pm ) It depends on what the situation is with your exchange but your exchange might be Enabled for SKY/EASYNET LLU services but there are no available slots to put you on as of yet, in which case they will transfer you over as soon as there are.

Hope this helps for now but run the tcpoptimizer tool first it may help as your connection speed to the internet is 7mbs so you should get around 800kb/s downloads from http:// sources and around 6000kbps on speedtests.

BTW the first stats you posted were appauling with a speed of only 2.9mbs whatever you did for the other 3 tests worked ( maybe you did not use an extension or you did not plug directly into the master socket ) but use the later setup as it is alot better than the original stats you posted, It shouldn't matter about wireless or not if your line stats are good but as a test only use the ethernet cable directly to your pc for now. If your speed increases then try the wirless and it should be the same, i know my wireless laptop is the same download speed as my pc.

      Regards

      Ian

Re: PLEASE HELP..BBand running so slow!!!!!!

hey up m8 think i seen this b4

      Trellis: OFF

think it should be switched on Saturday says this should be switched on to correct errors he says this be in another thread................

Trellis is showing as OFF. As trellis is a key part of the router's data correction algorithms you'll have a problematical connection for sure. You need to get onto Sky technical as this isn't something you can deal with. It may be a router fault but it may also (more likely) be an exchange equipment fault.

as ur on connect and that was concerning a sky mid i leave it to the experts to tell ya if im correct or not

Re: PLEASE HELP..BBand running so slow!!!!!!

Ian, cheers for your info m8...Very useful. But are you saying that if I run tcpoptimizer and get no success that I'm screwed until Sky upgrade my line? Hoping not lol!!! At the mo the max download speed I've had is 210kbps...

Whizz tx m8...I'll add that to my list!!

Trouble with Sky is that the TS guys don't have a scoobie and according to their system my line is fine and should be downloading almost 8MB.

Where do you guys reckon I should go with this?? Should I call them and get it escelated to tier 3 and then when I get hold of those guys email tjem my modem stats??

      Thanks for your time!

      John

      Well spotted

Actually I was being a bit lazy in the post you refer to. More accurately, Trellis indicates that a specific form of data coding is being used (e.g. Trellis Coded Modulation). In (fairly) simple terms it maximises spectral efficiency which amongst other things can decrease sensitivity to noise and allow higher speeds/longer line lengths. It also (if I recall correctly) has a part to play in error correction.

Out of idle curiosity I've just had a look back through a couple of dozen posts containing router stats and was only able to find one other (apart from this one and another today) where Trellis was showing as OFF. Could be a coincidence but in each case the member was complaining of a slow download speed compared to connection sync. Could be a trend developing?
