Help needed please! connection speeds issue

hi guys, after having no internet connection from sky for nearly a month i am connected. the problem is the connection seems really slow, i mean the downloads are much faster than my previous 2mps connection with tiscali however general interent browsing seems much much slower and i don't know why as my speed tests seem to show high speeds. most of the time the pictures on sites take really long to load, if they load at all. even this sites either does not load or takes ages to move between thread, for example it still hasn't finished loading everything in this even after all this typing. here are my router stats and i would be very grateful if someone could please help me, or i guess i'll have to leave sky because it just seems like too much stress and trouble for the money. thanks guys

Re: Help needed please! connection speeds issue

Clean out your Temporary internet folder, that may help a bit.

The main thing to try, is using an Open DNS server. You can find out how to do this HERE . Just follow the instructions for your OS in the right hand pane. Many have reported improved browsing speed and pings using the Open DNS servers rather than the ISP's.

Re: Help needed please! connection speeds issue

Open DNS replaces the ISP's servers with their own. The service is free although there may be some directed advertising, ie if you search for something you may be directed to the Open DNS sponsors or such like. A few have raised concerns about this, but many thousands use it with no problems and it is no worse than being directed to a Google sponsored site. You will not be bothered by pop-ups and such like.

You can find out about it in the link above, but really all you have to do is place 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, in the preferred and secondary DNS addresses in the Internet Protocol Properties. (Control Panel>Network Connections>Local Network>Internet Protocols>Properties -Select Use the following DNS address.)

Just to set your mind at rest, if you want to change back, you only have to tick the 'Obtain DNS automatically' in the Internet Protocol Properties and the Sky DNS will be used.

Re: Help needed please! connection speeds issue

The only things I can suggest now is that you look at what your PC is running. If you have Norton, especially one of the older versions, they are known resource hogs and will slow down everything. The very latest version is said to be better, but I have no personal knowledge of it.

You could try running Ccleaner previously known as Crapcleaner. It will clean out all the unneeded files on your PC and will help to speed it up generally.

A different browser may also help. Firefox is reckoned to be faster than IE, if you don't already have it, you could try that.

It may be an idea to post some details of what you are running, in the way of OS and security programs. Someone may be able to recommend improvements.

I have just had the thought that if you are running IE7, you may have the phishing filter enabled. It is a great idea, but can double page loading times.

i use firefox, although i did update to the latest internet explorer through the sky cd. i also installed mcafee off the sky cd but i also have the latest norton on a cd and i don't know which would be less of a resource hog. i'll try that ccleaner Isitme and see if i can get rid of unneded files on my pc.
