Low noise margin - Slow download

      Any experts out there ?

I'm on Sky Connect and supposed to be getting 8Mb download.

Yet I get less than 2Mb. According to the Router statistics, Sky are sending around 7Mb, but only 2Mb turns up at my end.

I must have spoken to half the Sky technicians by now. They have gone from one thing to another : your cables aren't connected properly (even though they were), you have the wrong cables (even though they are the right ones), the internet settings are wrong (even though changing them made no difference), we'll phone you back (but they never do), it's being dealt with (but it never is), you've got the right speed (even though various speed tests show that I'm not). Maybe your computer is old and slow (even though it's new and fast). Maybe you're downloading too much at one time (even though I'm downloading nothing else). After speaking to BT they change the MTU (but it makes no difference). After trying everything, some other technicians try it all again. I'm not sure that they know what they're doing. They're just going around in circles, trying one excuse after another.

The noise margin is very low - 6db to 3db. I read that this means that I will not be able to get faster speeds than the 2Mb I'm getting.

Is it BT that are supposed to increase the noise margin ?

Is increasing the noise margin likely to resolve the problem ?

Can I suggest that you take some time to read some of the threads on this topic and then post back stating specifically everything that you have tried (ie you say you have changed your settings, but what settings??).

Then we will be in a much better position to help you.

      Please post back with:

      - Your full router stats
      - that you have tried plugging the router into the test socket behind the BT master socket
      - that you have ran the optimiser
      - a speedtest from Namesco BroadbandMax ADSL Broadband Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL Broadband connection speed

Re: Low noise margin - Slow download

I've tried everything that Sky has thrown at me, plus suggestions on other Threads here.

I went back to the default settings on Internet properties, and also down to medium on security settings.

These are the router statistics and actual download speed :

      Connection speed 7616 kbps
      Line attenuation 46 db
      Noise margin 6mb - 3mb
MTU size changed by Sky at BT's suggestion to 1458
      Actual download speed 1.94mb

      What is the "optimiser" ?

I'll have a go at plugging the router into the test socket behind the BT master socket, although I'm not sure looking at it how I'll do that without really messing it up.

My guess, based on semi-ignorance is that the noise margin is preventing a proper download speed, and that the noise margin will have to be increased (somehow) in order to change this.

Look at the links under Broadband at the bottom of Reddwarfcrew's post, you will find all the info you need. Also post your detailed stats, the short stats you have posted don't really help.

It is not really necessary to make your full post bold, you know, you will have noticed that no one else does.

Re: Low noise margin - Slow download

Agree with the other posts, you need to show more detailed stats.

From what you said so far your attenuation at 46db is high suggesting you are a long way from your exchange.

You quote a noise level of 6-3db, is this 6db downstream and 3 db upstream or does your downstream jump between 6 and 3 db ???

Either way a noise level of 6db is borderline for a stable connection.

You need to look at the various threads suggested and post some detailed router stats to give a clearer picture.

I thought noise margin was measured in db ?? As the others have said you need to post your detailed stats for anyone to able to throw any light on the problem.
