Test each of your downstairs sockets by plugging in the filter and then connecting the router, then wait a couple of minutes. It should work on one of these and the internet light should come on. Then you need to figure out how to get a straight run to your pc without any other extensions in the way and then run your phone extensions from the filter that the internet cable is plugged into

she's going to phone sky and tell them what's happened, she's prepared to pay for an install but what will they do? would they make it wireless?

      Re: unable to connect!

Sorry, but after the trouble I had, I haven't dared face the wireless thing, but I do know you'll have to make sure your pc's got a wireless card if you want to run it from the router plugged in downstairs.

If you decide to do Isitime's option 3 on post 18 (ie run a long Cat 5 cable from downstairs to the pc upstairs), then you can get a variety of lengths from Screwfix.com at very reasonable prices.

      Re: unable to connect!

Fortunately, the Sky router is supplied with wireless enabled and I think, with no security as default. When you set up the adapter in her PC it will find the router broadcast. Different adapters have different soft ware so I can't tell you exactly what to do, but when you have connected to the router you will be able to set up the security. WAP is recommended, set it first on the adapter then on the router. Write down the code you use and keep it safe. The default network key is printed on the router label, if the security is enabled.
