      Help with SKY MAX

I am a very confused SKY MAX subscriber. I thought that since I live a short distance from the telephone exchange I should be getting close to 16Mb (or at least that my router should sync at that speed). However the router syncs at 8096kbps and I reach downstream connection speeds around 6.5Mb.
Since my line statistics (see below) indicates a good strong signal I rung Sky support asking for their Tier3 support to check and uncap my line. The guy told me that my line was uncapped and refused to issue a ticket number for my query. He told me that my line max speed is about 6Mb, that I am lucky to be able to sync at 8Mb, that Sky cannot do anything and that the problem is the BT copper line running from the exhange to my home which can hold only 6Mb. I am unsured to believe it or not. I am not a technical person but I thought that the speed depends on the equipment at the exchange, the distance between the exchange and the home and your set up at home and not on the copper line. Could someone please help me understand.

My exhange is Perivale and my line statistics are as follows
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8096 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 14.0 db 12.0 db
Noise Margin 12.9 db 13.0 db

      regards

      Welcome to the forum

      Sadly you've had a typical T1 runaround

You're quite right, your attenuation will easily support 16meg even on a line with a bit of noise (which yours may well have of course).

Sorry but you'll have to persevere and get through to T3.

I had to argue with the guy (stern but polite but not nasty) who kept for some reason saying I was on R/ADSL and 8096k was the max I could get, I then pointed out I was on the Max package and should be on ADSL2+ getting UPTO 16Mb and not capped on 8096k on ADSL1 (max that technology would handle), he said we havent unbundled your exchange, I pointed out, er, yeah you have, no we havent, (this went on for about 10 minutes) he then pointed my line must be bad, I had to tell him it wasn't and that I had 14.5Mb with another provider (Bulldog)

      here's my Stats

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8096 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 26.0 db 16.5 db
Noise Margin 15.2 db 14.0 db

Push came to shove and I said he was vastly mistaken and could I possibly request a ticket number and have tier 3 call me (after 20 minutes of being on hold) of which he agreed. (got ticket number and just waiting on em calling now)

a shame really, the guy was really trying to be helpful and to be honest no voices were raised (polite thruout) by either of us but it was a stalemate.

the old saying is true tho,

      perserverance pays off
