Noise margin greatly drops when phone is answered

My line is currently capped at 4096kbps but I usually get at least noise margins of 15dB so I am in the process of trying to get the cap removed. However, I get frequency disconnections and I have just noticed that when the phone rings and is answered the noise figure immediately drops to around 6dB, then 5.5dB and then it drops the connection. As soon as the call is terminated the figure rises again to 15dB+.

Is it worth getting a filtered face plate for the master socket - do you think this would make a difference as the only thing I can think of that would be causing this is bad filtering?

Trying another filter may help, but also try connecting directly to the test socket behind the faceplate. There is a good chance that your internal wiring is causing interference, especially the ring circuit. I think an ADSL faceplate is a must have.

My money would be on a duff microfilter or a faulty phone.

Just tried plugging the router into the master BT TEST socket. Noise margin was 19.5dB until I ran the landline from my mobile. Upon answering it the NM dropped to 2.1dB and then disconnected - surely dodgy filter? There is always some noise on the line too.

If you can hear noise on the line then you need to report it to BT as they should do something about that.
Make sure your extensions are unplugged and try another filter and phone and if the problem persists, ring BT.

If there is noise on the voice phone (and you have tried a new filter in the test socket) then yes BT will get involved.

Re: Noise margin greatly drops when phone is answered

Just report to them that you have a noisy line, don't mention that you are on Sky Broadband, whatever you do

Improving the voice line will automatically improve the broadband side.
