Sky Broadband enabled laptop used on non Sky networks?

      Greetins once again people!

Now the title may seem a little off and what not but i have encountered some problems (surprise surprise) and i was wondering if anyone could help put an correct answer to my theory!

i have a Philips slimline laptop that i basicly use for everything! now where i mainly live as a few folk that helped me on my last problem know (looks like i'll be resetting my router alot untill i get the line capped ) i have Sky Broadband at this addres.

on my laptop i have installed as required the Sky Broadband Software from the disc etc.

now today i am visiting my father at a diffrent location whom doesnt yet have Sky Broadband, but for some VERY odd reason....my laptop just will not connect to his Netgear router! the password is correct and the encryption key is the samewithout a doubt, but it just will not connect to his router. it attempts to aquire the IP address several times with no sucess!

My current theory is.....Could this be to do with the Sky Software? as we already know we cannot use a router that isn't from Sky, would this mean after the software is installed you cannot connect to un-enabled Sky lines or non Sky routers?

atleast i hope this is what the problem is.

can someone confirm this for me atall so i don't go crazy trying to adjust every setting under the sun to make it work.

and would anyone know of any cure to this!

      many thanks AGAIN

      James

The fact of using Sky at your home location should have no effect on its use on another wireless equipped router.

The usual issues are 802.11b versus 802.11g, reliable wireless reception, channel number, selecting the right access point in the scan utility, encryption passphrase.

I would disable the router's encryption temporarily.

Re: Sky Broadband enabled laptop used on non Sky networks?

This i understand....but the problem i am facing has never cropped up before.

Before changing to Sky i was on AOL and my father was on Tiscali....and i never faced a problem connecting wirelessly before.

i have had Sky 3 weeks now i believe and in that time i have not had chance to visit my father...

this weekend as i say i'm currently visiting him but i'm having no luck connecting to the router. this is why i came to the conclusion that i have as nothing has changed on my laptop other than the Sky software being installed

You don't need the Sky software installed. Your laptop will work fine on your Sky connection without it, even so I dont see why it should stop you connecting elsewhere.
