5kb Download Speed? Help Big Time Please

I have had sky broadband since November last year, we have had nothing but trouble since we got it, I rang sky up telling them there is a problem, they said there wasnít anything wrong at their end then couple of days later they said there was. Nothing was done. We have a BT phone line could it be there end? And if so sound I give them a ring and get them out to look at our line?

Most of the time my download speed is around 15kbs to 30, maybe 3 or 4 times in a month if Iím lucky its the real download speed of 300 to 400kb, its really confusing if my line was broke wouldnít it always be slow? Or could I been piggy backing of someone elseís line?

Sorry for my grammar and spellings Iím not very good with writing things out...

      Please reply

If you could tell us what you have tried?

If you have not tried anything, post your stats:

      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/view-routerstats.html

Also try the test socket, and then repost your stats:

      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/view-master.html

And hopefully someone can shed some light.

Re: 5kb Download Speed? Help Big Time Please

First thing, looking at your noise margin, it looks like you've been capped at 4512kbps.

If you have then no amount of rebooting or the test socket or using TCPoptimizer will deliver the 14000kbps your line is capable of supporting.

Second thing, Sky usually only cap when they find or are told about line problems. Have you been in contact with Sky recently?

However, being capped at ~4512kbps wouldn't explain a download speed of 5kb. Unless you are testing via wireless there must be a major problem either with your line or maybe the exchange equipment/setup. If you are using wireless then my bet would be that's the problem (with your low download speeds - not low connection speed).

Lastly, you say that the connection speed doesn't change when you use the test socket? What about the noise margin? Please reboot the router and take the stats. Then connect to the test socket (behind the faceplate of your master socket) reboot and take another set. Post both sets. This may give an indication of the level of problems with your line. If not then you'll need to post your full router stats.

Yes told sky about our problem, they told us to speak to BT, rang BT up told them that our line was very nosy and they said we can send out an engineer but if the problem is at your own end, it would cost over £100, so I left it at that, no I donít use wireless,

Iím next to the sky rooter with the leads that goes straight into the master socket and thatís just at the side of me... Iíll do the test socket as soon as I can, will have screenshots a bit later on

      Thanks so far

Re: 5kb Download Speed? Help Big Time Please

What they seem to suggest is that your phone and/or digibox are causing some noise. Are they properly filtered?

And you now appear to be capped at 5728/448.

What's happening with your download speed? Still very low?

It may help if you post your full stats using something like Mognuts utility (see Tech forum sticky). Reboot your router then run it really hard for at least an hour before taking them.

Unfortunately you will have to sort out any line problems - yourself if it's in your home or BT if it is external. Your full stats (ideally two sets - normal and test socket) will show the current level of errors on your line. They will however be suppressed by the capping so they won't be conclusive.

When you've done everything you can to remove noise, which may well include changing/improving your wiring and fitting a replacement filtered faceplate, then you can call Sky and ask them to uncap you. If you speak to T3 they can do this whilst you are talking to them and they can see what errors are occurring. T1 will just continue to give you the runaround.
