Advice wanted (specially old Plusnet users)

      Hello all.

I have a slight quandry. Sky have been "reminding" me every couple of months since I registered my interest in SkyBB last year that I am able to get SkyBB should I so choose. I have, until now, figured I will just wait for Be to become available in August in my area, but it's beginning to dawn on me is there much point?

I'm entering university in october, so Be seems somewhat pointless to me now... but I would still like higher speeds whilst i'm here. Basically I want peoples recommendation as to whether it is worth me getting SkyBB Max based on the following:

      - I do not play significan't games (the occasional bit of wow) enough to worry about pings.
      - i'm currently paying 25~/mo for my business connection, and as a sky TV movie world subscriber, going down to 10/mo is very tempting for double the speed
      - i have a rock solid connection at 8128 and can download >800k/s at ANY time of the day
      - i download between 80-160gb per month - this will likely change at uni, but not til then
      - at uni i will be initiating a VPN to my home server so i can stream video etc. to wherever I reside at uni.... thus a higher upload speed is highly desirable (mine is currently 448)

      My main concerns are:

I have a domain free with my plusnet account that i use very regularly for hosting of misc files etc. and it seems that SkyBB, even on the Max service, have no such thing.... or any webspace of any kind? Am I actually going to have to weigh up the costs of buying a webserver as well as my SkyBB subscription to see if it is cheaper than my current 25/mo for speed payoffs? Also, as things stand I expect to be able to download something at will, and it will be as fast as possible based on the server i'm downloading it from... is SkyBB Max effected significant from 'busy' periods? - I realise this is a bit of a loaded question but appreciate any feedback.

      Thanks.

Just for reference, my line stats are reasonable:

      Down Up
      SNR (dB): 15.1 21.0
      Attn(dB): 19.5 9.5
      Pwr(dBm): 19.8 12.3
      Max(Kbps): 8224 1100
      Rate (Kbps): 8128 448

      Hi

You will get at least the same as you have now speed wise.

As for webhosting, it costs about a tenner a year at the most to host a domain, don't let it put you off.

As for busy periods, I have yet to find any on MAX.

      Good luck!

You have what looks like a very nice line.. you could probably get like ~15Mb..

      Thanks for the feedback.

After further research of SkyBB it seems however they do not offer static ip's which instantly rules it as a competitive isp for me. Sadly it seems now I have to decide what is more important: saving the 200 pound a year in costs which can go to uni, or having a line that can no longer be called secure as i'll have to change the way I authenticate to every server i access.

You could always use a DNS provider such as dynDNS which would allow you to use a static address to access your server. I have used it in the past to great success, and the router that Sky supply can talk directly to dyndns.
