      Almost connected?

      Hi,

I ordered the max sky broadband, the router turned up and my activation date letter came through saying it would be the 23rd April, possibily delayed 3 days etc.

So I decided to plug in the router last night to see if it was active, at first I thought there was nothing going, but now it seems that it is partially working. MSN messenger managed to sign in (typical!), however I couldn't browse to any webpages. The PC Network config looks OK, DNS pointing to 192.168.0.1. Tried a ping to google.com and it resolves the IP address, but drops around 75% of packets. I couldn't get onto the router as I didn't know the login details, so I gave up.

I haven't heard anything from sky saying that the line has been activated, and I am not sure whether I should hear from them. So I am wondering whether the line isn't properly active yet, or whether there is a problem with the line / router.

      Any ideas?
      Dom

      Re: Almost connected?

OK, I got a voice message from sky saying that I have now been activated and things have improved somewhat. However I'm still getting disapointing download speeds:

      Down 455 kbps Up 272kbps

      Router stats:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 11536 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 29.5 db 17.6 db
Noise Margin 0.4 db 12.5 db

Connection Speed 1884 kbps 764 kbps.

      Re: Almost connected?

      That's a bad Noise Margin 0.4 db 12.5 db

Try rebooting your router a few times

      Re: Almost connected?

Moved to the master socket, taken off the faceplate, and connected via the test socket. Getting similar speeds and stats.

After a hard reboot (pulling the power cord) it connects with these stats:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 11475 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 24.5 db 17.4 db
Noise Margin 0.3 db 13.0 db

If I reboot through the diagnostics page on the router I get stats like these:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2349 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 29.0 db 17.4 db
Noise Margin 13.6 db 12.3 db

I have tried a number of reboots to see if I can get a noise margin around the 6dB mark but it doesn't seem to want to do anything between 0.5 and 13.

Wink Re: Finally connected, and I now have an expensive paperweight!

Two weeks on and things were still no better, had sporadic internet access at best. Still experiencing the same problem with either too much or too little noise margin.

I decided to plug and my old router (Netgear DB834G) and give it a go with that one. So I got my sky PPPOA username and password from the Mognuts site, plugged in the old router, put in the username and password details, hit apply, and presto I now have working internet connection.

      Speed test:
Download Speed: 8619 kbps (1077.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 474 kbps (59.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

      Router stats:
      DownStream Connection Speed 9973 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 764 kbps

Connection Speed - Down 9973 kbps Up 764 kbps
Line Attenuation - Down 24 db Up 8.5 db
Noise Margin - Down 7 db Up 12 db

packet loss (ping google.com from cmd line):
      0% loss

Conclusion, either the sky router or the firmware they put on it is causing a problem. So thanks but no thanks sky, I will be using my own router. I should have tried that 3 weeks ago it would have saved me hours of grief!
