A bit of a puzzle - Help needed!
OK guys, here is the deal....
I was connected to sky bb last week. All was fine.
I came home from work yesterday, and my internet was a bit slow. I ran a couple of speed tests speed test.net and I was getting dial uo type results. I looked at my modem stats and they were fine!
I did a reboot and my connection remained fine syncing in the hugh 6000- low 7000kbs
Internet is really laggy especially on sites with graphics on.
I rang sky technical support and they took me through the basic tests and ran a line test, they said that everything is fine at their end, and advised me to run my AV and spyware shecks to see if that helped.
I hooked up my still live cable connection, to see if it was my sky, and that will not connect at all! I have switched between them previously with no problems. My cable modem appears to still be connected all the right lights are flashing but nothing.
The other thing, I ran my bit torrent client on a fast torrent, and it downloaded at 6megs no problem.
Oh my current stats are
Connection Speed 6804 kbps 766 kbps
Line Attenuation 40.5 db 26.0 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 12.7 db
I have run a system restore and no change.
I am really confused Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try doing a Traceroute. It might show up a problem somewhere along the way.

Don't worry, I really was going to leave it till the weekend at least, but it has really been bugging me.
Here are my results.
And the other thing that has been slow like dial up is FTP and webbased downloads, like downloading firefox from their site for example.

Well that looks ok.
Make sure your cache is empty and then I think I would suspect adware/virus if it doesn't improve.

I have run adaware, and a mcafe virus scan... nothing! a few low risk trackers from adaware and no change, I will try clearing cache. Thanks for trying to help!

Well the only other things I can think of are:
a) Problems with Sky's DNS servers
b) If it's IE sometimes the DLLs can get corrupted - repair from add/remove programs
c) A firewall issue ?
d) Another computer connected (You're not toxicdata's neighbour are you ? )
e) Contention on the network
Dunno what else to suggest...Hope it clears.

I really appreciate the suggestions, thanks!
as for b) I am on firefox
c) I have tried completely uninstalling firewall and no change
d) I have wireless disabled
and e) If it is contention, shouldn't that affect my torrent downloads as well? They are fine.
Ho hum! I might try tech support again tonight!

I have been seeing something similar when I introduce a wireless laptop to the router. I posted something here: Router speed drops, reboot recovers speed
Even the router admin pages seem sluggish when it gets into this state.
I know it's not virii or adware - I'm all Mac and Linux at home.
So, no help from me, just empathy...

Thanks for the sympathy
I have to admit though that my connection to my router has been fine! I can load the admin pages no problem.
