Ancient Laptop beats Pentium D - Huh?

I read all the posts about optimising your speed by using the main phone socket, fitting filtered faceplate and so on, so I thought I'd check out mine.

I have my pc/Sky modem in a room fitted with a phone line extension. I have a 3GHz Pentium D with a VIA Rhine II fast ethernet card in the pc and an ancient laptop running at 600MHz or so. Anyway for convenience, did the test using the laptop fitted with an old PCMCIA cardbus/NIC.

Using the telephone extension socket, the Sky modem showed:
      Downstream 7168kbps
      Upstream 448kbps
      Attenuation Down 15.5db
      Attenuation Up 28.0db
      Noise Down 5.5db
      Noise Up 22.0db

      Speedtest.net Download 2691kbps
      Speedtest.net Upload 378kbps

Moving it to the main BT socket (an old one, not the NTE5 type) using a plug in filter gave:
      Down 7072kbps
      Up 448kbps
      Attenuation Down 42.0db
      Attenuation Up 28.0db
      Noise Down 6.0db
      Noise Up 22.0db

      Speedtest.net Download 2943kbps
      Speedtest.net Upload 368kbps

Connecting the pc back to the phone extension gave:
      Down 5408kbps
      Up 448kbps
      Atten Down 43.0
      Atten Up 28.0
      Noise Down 8.4
      Noise Up 22.0

      Speedtest.net Download 2903kbps
      Speedtest.net Upload 380kbps

Suggesting that the line connection using the old laptop was faster than using the pc. Or am I reading all this stuff wrongly? What do these stats mean, if anything?

      Cheers, JaX

      Yep.

The first two sets of stats had a noise margin of 5.5db and 6db hence the second set being slightly slower.

The third set had a noise margin of 8.4db hence a lot slower.

If you don't understand the relationship between noise margin and connection speed please see the first sticky in my signature at the bottom of this post for an explanation.

Also, your download speeds are low for your connection speeds. See the second sticky in my signature for help with improving this.
