Can see router but cannot Ping - Vista

      Hi all,

As my old Athlon based PC was dying a painful and frustrating death, I today bought a new computer with Windows Vista.

However, I now have a connection problem. I have trawled this site but haven't seen too many vista issues so here goes:

The PC finds the SKY**** network and connects to it wirelessly and it shows so in network manager. However, I cannot access 192.168.0.1 (or the net) and neither can I ping it. I am typing this on my wife's mac which is working fine. I tried pinging the PC from the router and lost all packets there too.

So, I know some of you have Sky BB working with Vista. I am using a Belkin F5D7050 v3xxx dongle at the PC end and the standard Sky BB 834gt router. Are there any obvious boxes I'm not ticking? I have downloaded the Belkin vista drivers. Unfortunately, me ethernet cable isn't long enough to reach the PC!

      Any help much obliged!!!

      Thanks in advance,
      Ig

Check Vista's firewall, it is probably blocking the router.

Just to expand, Vista's firewall, unlike most software walls, will just block without telling you, which is very frustrating.

Ok thanks. As I am brand new to Vista, is it straightforward? Is it just a matter of turning the firewall off completely to see if it helps?

Re: Can see router but cannot Ping - Vista

Update: Managed to get a very long cable so I could connect by ethernet. Everything works fine. Which I guess means it is a compatibility issue with my usb wireless dongle. What dongles are other people using? As I mentioned, mine is a Belkin F5D7050.

      Thanks.
