      Connection Issues in the Evening

Hi. A couple of weeks ago I switched to Sky Broadband Mid (part of the See, Speak, Surf package). Every day since then, between around 9:30pm and 10:30pm, the Internet slows down drastically, and then disconnects - web pages won't load and I'm automatically logged out of IM services (MSN and Yahoo). Sometimes the problem is rectified by just unplugging the router for 10 seconds or so; other times the router and computer have to be rebooted. I tried turning off the UPnP a few days ago, but that's not made a difference. The Rothwell exchange in Leeds is closest to where I am, so presumably this is my exchange - apparently there's no maintenance or anything happening there, so no obvious reason for disruption.

Before I joined Sky, I was with Tiscali Broadband, and the same thing happened then, although it was earlier on in the evening, between about 6pm and 7pm - the modem lost its connection, but then resynchronised and all was well again. However, this was on a different phone line.

During the day and after the reboots, it works fine - the speed is fine, etc.

I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions that might cure the problem? Turning off the UPnP hasn't worked. Perhaps it could be a problem with the line or exchange, as it happens regularly each evening, and has been doing so with both Tiscali and Sky, even though they were on different lines? Possibly contention?

Thanks for any help. An idea of which direction to go in would be appreciated, before I start phoning Sky and BT. Tiscali customer services was traumatic enough!

      Cheers, Michael.

Hi. Thanks for replying. I had a look at some of the stickies on the forum, hence I found out about the UPnP bug, but I'll have a read through the sticky in your signature and see what can be done. Cheers!

      Nice-looking site, by the way.

Re: Connection Issues in the Evening

Well, I've read a few forum stickies and posts and tried the things suggested regarding turning off the UPnP, and also rebooting the router, but the problem still remains. Today has been especially bad for the noise margin dropping, which is what appears to be the cause of the problem. I wonder what's causing it? Does anybody have any other suggestions? Thanks.

P.S. These are my stats after being connected for 42 minutes. When I started, the downstream noise margin was 10.1 db! It seems to have been dropping more quickly than usual today..

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2784 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 8.3 db 13.0 db

Re: Connection Issues in the Evening

Me too. I've been on mid for a couple of weeks. I'm connected at 4960 kbps, and, so far, haven't had any problems at this speed. However, as I am only 1.6km from exchange, I have been monitoring things to try to determine why I can't achieve a stable connection at a higher speed. Noise margin this morning was 12.4, and it stayed above 11.0 until about 8pm, when it started to drop sharply (down to 6.6 just after 9pm). Is this kind of reduction normal? Where does the increased noise come from?

I forgot to mention that upstream noise margin is always 14.0 - it has never changed from this value day or night.

You need to use this Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4 to extract your detailed router stats, open them with wordpad and post them here, they give detail of line errors etc and may give clues as to your problem. Best done at time of day that you are having trouble.
