      Unknown Address attached

      Hello,

I have being looking at my router status and have recently checked the users in use, and i keep seeing and unknown user. It has an IP address and Mac address and has a name of unknown. It should only be me my computer connected. Is this likely someone else is on my network getting free internet? If so how do i get rid of him/her?

      Regards

      Skyed

well if you only use your network youcan do 2 things
      a) if you are connected by a wire turn wireless off
      b) if you are connected wirelessly ensure security is on but in the router settings you can allow only yourself via the IP and mac address!

      Re: Unknown Address attached

I dont think that part of the menu is always accurate, probably another bug! We use 4 or 5 wireless devices here, quite often none of them are displayed in that list, on the other hand some of them sometimes stay in the list long after the devices have been disconnected from network and powered down! Same issue on 2 Sky routers I have used. I just ignore it these days, but it is always a good idea to set up your wireless access list just for extra sercurity, If you are still using WPA secure setting that the router came set up with you should be ok anyway.

      Re: Unknown Address attached

Are you sure it's not actually your own PC's IP & MAC?

The router says "unknown" if it can't see the attached device's NetBIOS name. So if NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled on the PC, the router won't know the PC's name.

If it is not a valip IP & MAC for something on your network, then, as already mentioned in earlier posts, make sure you have WPA enabled, & also MAC filtering ("wireless station access list" under the router's wireless settings), & make sure you change the router's admin password from the default "sky".
