Re: Switch from BT to Sky and keep e-mail address ?

I would say that this is very unlikely. Normally, once you close your ISP account your email account will close too - at best you may get a week or so before they close the email account, but don't count on it.

Check your BT term & conditions to double-check, but it would certainly be a first.

What is the domain name of your email address? btbroadband.com btopenworld.com btclick.com ? If it is one of those you will lose your email account.

GMail has the option to download from a pop3 account these days.

Go to Settings->Accounts->Add another mail account

      and go from there

That isn't going to help him keep an email address for an account that is closed...

However - it definitely points out something obvious - don't rely on an ISP for your email account. Either use a service like gmail (my personal favourite) or something similar - even better, use Google Apps with your own domain name and then you can keep your email address for life!

I switched from BT to Sky last October and can still access my BT email although I guess one day it will stop working.

I left AOL for Sky last September and have been told I can keep my e mail address for free, and I still check this, yep still there.

Ahh yes, but anyone can have an AOL email address, they give them away for free - Free Email - AOL UK

BT don't, although as Alan B pointed out - his still works after 6 months. I had a Zen email address that lasted about 6 weeks after my BB account closed. The problem is that it is not guaranteed to last.
