      New Sky BB Customer

      Hi,

I am a new Sky BB Max customer. But I even though I am a Max customer I seem a bit dissapointed with my line speed connected @ just 4928 Downstream.

I know other people on my exchange are getting close to 24m/bits download with another provider (BE) and I can't even get nowhere near halfway of upto 16MB that Sky BB offer!

I am only 1.3km away from my exchange and here are my current router/modem stats from the Sky Broadband box. Do I have a case of asking for higher a broadband speed with this??

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4928 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 33.0 db 20.0 db
Noise Margin 12.0 db 14.0 db

      Thanks!

      Hi

The only thing I can suggest is to troubleshoot. Try the test socket and then post your stats.

      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/view-master.html

      and the stats

      Re: New Sky BB Customer

Okay I done the TEST SOCKET troubleshoot and got the following stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4928 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.5 db 20.0 db
Noise Margin 13.5 db 14.0 db

Surely, I should get higher speeds with this!!

The guy a few houses away down the street gets much higher!!

      Re: New Sky BB Customer

Okay, just took another reading from the Test Socket and got the following stats:

      System Up Time 00:57:47
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 104255 141074 0 6128 37438 00:56:09
      LAN 10M/100M 141433 105327 0 37243 6631 00:57:45
      WLAN 11M/54M 405 0 0 21 0 00:57:35

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4928 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 33.0 db 20.0 db
Noise Margin 14.3 db 14.0 db

      Why did it change?

I really want to dump my Virgin Broadband but before I do I want to make sure my Sky BB connection is reliable and the best I can possibly have.

      Re: New Sky BB Customer

Your connection speed stayed the same but your noise margin changed which is fairly conclusive proof that you've been capped by Sky at 4928kbps.

Sky normally do this when they find line errors. To have a connection speed of under 5000kbps at an attenuation of 33db (ignore the 15.5db as that's a bug) and a noise margin of 12-14db certainly indicates that you may have a significant noise problem on your line.

Please post your full stats (use Mognuts - see sticky in Tech forum). A problem of course is that the low speed you are capped at will heavily mask any errors you have. Also, please describe your physical connection e.g. how is your router connected - extensions etc.

If you can solve any noise problems and get uncapped then you can expect a connection of ~15000kbps.

Anything I can do to fix this?

Okay, the previous two stats were from the Test Socket.

Now the router is back at the normal place which is at the back bedroom with an extention that BT fixed.

      Re: New Sky BB Customer

Yep you have high CRC errors, This was with it plugged into an extension?? If so you need to plug back into the test socket and run router for a few hours and extract these stats again, If your errors drop then you have a problem with your internal extension wiring. I had similar problems and disconnecting the ring wire fixed the problem.

      @FOXCLOSE

To get that level of errors when capped to the extent you are shows that you have a significant line problem. Were you to be uncapped without resolving this then your connection would be very unstable.

As advised by Koala5 you need to run a comparison with the test socket.

      Thanks guys, both of you!

Yes, Koala the detailed stats were from the extention.

The last few days I've been losing the connection for a few seconds. Often this is highlighted when I am playing online gaming, so it's a problem I really have to fix, before I can do anything!

I'll re-rerun the Test Socket troubleshoot and post the extracted detailed stats here in a few days time. So stay with me!
