How do I know, how fast and how much?

New today. First post. Sky Broadband owner for 3 days only and getting used to it after an AOL dialup for 3 years. First few questions:

      1. How do I know when my connection is "active"? On old system I got a circling globe icon when I was actively on the internet. Now, I'm sometimes not sure if I'm connected or not.

      2. Where can I see how fast my connection is operating at any time? What is a "good speed" to have for uploads or downloads?

      3. What is the "reasonable use" limit referring to with regard to "downloading? Is my time on the internet (when just browsing and not downloading anything) being totalled and limited, or can I come and go freely without limit - if not downloading?

Thanks to anyone with any of these answers and greetings from a new recruit...Hope I can find this message again to read the answers.

Your router should be connected 24 hours a day, so theoretically you should always be connected.

You can check the stats of the router

Copy the stats out of the above link and post in here

      Package details are here

As long as you don't abuse your connection you should be fine.

Thanks for the very prompt response. So, no need to turn the router off at the mains each evening. Any problem if I did, maybe to reduce carbon emissions from an electrical gadget in standby mode 24/7?

Turning the router off is purely a personal choice. They are designed to be on 24 hours a day, tbh I never turn mine off.

Re: How do I know, how fast and how much?

...and with regard to your comment to my last point (about limits to downloading and uploading), I have downloaded Mcafee security suite today. I might want the occasional iTune for my ipod. I have a 5 member family who will be using the internet connection, but we don't download a lot (at present - probably because it was so slow on AOL dialup). Kids use MSN a lot. Is the use of something like that, part of my monthly allocation, or doesn't that "count", until I physically download things?

      Thanks again

Re: How do I know, how fast and how much?

      Hi

On your package you have a 40gb limit, that in reality is huge.

If you really want to keep an eye on your uploads and downloads you will need some type of software installing on your PC to measure it.

Some is free, some is paid for, I use DU Meter and am about to do a review on its functionality and value for money, if you can wait til the review is finished you can make an informed decision. There is however a trial version, then you can buy it at a later date if it does what you want.

      Further details here

      (Coming soon) DU Meter 3.x
