3rd router and ready to bin it! Please help!

Yes they've just sent me my 3rd router.
      And it won't work.
I'm now using the very first one I got - wireless wont work though. And phone use disconnects the bb connection!

      My experience has been hellish!

Wouldn't work at all at first - irish tech support said to wait 10 days for BT to test the line? Eventually it worked on LAN only - new router sent out.

2nd router worked for about a week then it died - completely.

When I say it worked, that was unless anyone picks up the phone - then it disconnects. Midway through the phone call it reconnects until the phone is put down again then it disconnects. This has been the case with every router. I have checked every microfilter and Ive got plenty now! - always the same result.
And the phone line quality is appalling if connected to any microfilter. But it's fine if it isn't!

Today I got the 3rd one - cant connect at all.
The netgear router page loads but there are no adsl details and the test cant connect. The name of the router is fine as is the password.

The phone disconnects the line every time and i have only got one socket, one filter, one phone and one laptop.

I am completely confused now - please help if you can!

I havent even mentioned customer service and tech support - I'll save that lot for another day!

If you have extensions have you tried removing the BT master socket face plate and plugging into the test socket?

      @wolfytom07

      Welcome to the forum

Maybe you've been extraordinarily unlucky with three dud filters or maybe, and I have to ask, you're doing something fundamentally wrong? The symptoms you describe are not at all symptomatic of a faulty router. They are exactly what you would expect if the microfilter was fitted incorrectly.

If you only have one socket then the microfilter is plugged directly into this then just the router must be plugged into the router socket in the microfilter. Everything else is then plugged into the phone socket in the microfilter.

Please confirm this is exactly how you are connected.

Re: 3rd router and ready to bin it! Please help!

Thanks for the support - it's much appreciated!

I have one socket. One filter plugged into that. One phone and one adsl cable plugged into the filter. And that's it.

The phone is a duet 500 - dont know if that's dect or not.

      The problems are
      1. Poor phone line quality if connected through microfilter
      2. BB disconnects if phone is picked up then reconnects after about 5 mins
      3. Then disconnects when phone is replaced
      4. Can't connect at all through new router and I have entered correct name and network key.
      5. Router page shows no adsl info available and the test fails to connect.

      Thanks again!

Re: 3rd router and ready to bin it! Please help!

The first three still sound like a microfilter or phone equipment problem but then you seem to have connected the filter correctly and you've tried other microfilters (and routers).

That suggests either the phone or the exchange equipment at fault.

The last two sound like a possible exchange problem.

Will the router connect if you unplug the phone? If it does then a phone problem sounds likely. If it doesn't then it could be an exchange problem.

Do you have a lot of noise on your phone line? You can check by doing a 'quiet line' test .
Plug a phone directly into the BT test socket.
Dial 17070, press option 2 (quiet line test)
You should hear 'Quiet Line Test' and then silence, there should be no whistles, clicks or buzzing. It should be completely silent. If there is noise on the line, make sure it's not your phone's connection to the socket, wiggle it a bit, try another phone if you have one. If you are sure its the line making the noise then dial BT and report a fault, they should be able to sort it out. Remember if they find that the fault is on your side of the socket, they will charge you, so make sure you use the test socket. Also if you report a fault, don't mention Broadband, report it as a telephone fault. If the line is silent, do a check from the normal socket, if you get noise, then your internal wiring is at fault.

Thanks very much for your help, Isi!

BT engineer visited today and apparently solved my problem.

The quiet test proved the problem was BT's. He said it was noisy as old boots.

Now the line is silent and I don't get disconnected when the phone rings - fantastic!

      You're a hero!
