That is what I thought was supposed to happen but apparently it doesn't seem to work like that as you have found out. It took me a while to finally get everything sorted out with my old ISP as they thought I was still with them.

It's how I got caught out too. When I left Pipex - a long time ago - actually using a MAC to migrate was considered notification to quit the account too, end of, not so these days with most ISPs and you have to close the finance side of things manually.

Thats what they would have you believe, Sky told me they would sort it all out, AND! I rang BT on the day I switched to Sky Broadband and said "right my broadband account is cancelled yes?" "Yes Sir it has been cancelled we will ammend your payments" Then 3 months later wollop! a bill for 3 months of charges for BT, they then try to tell me I am still recieving there broadband service! I damn sure the bigger these companys get the more incompetent.

Same happened to me when I migrated from Orange, however Sky agreed it was their error, and did refund me for the extra months payment that I'd made to Orange.
Even sent me a reply paid envelop to send them my bill in.
Motto is to use belt and braces in these cases, tell your old ISP, and make sure your bank cancels your direct debit.
Its a bit more complicated if you want to cancel a continuous payment on a credit card, you have to do this in writing to the bank/CC company.

Or cancel it yourself like I did via online banking. I did this as I did not want BT taking another month out after I had left them. Surprise surprise they tried to and it was only after they tried to do this this that things started to get sorted.

I have just come across this in the new regulations for supplying MACs-
The provider must not disconnect a customers service if a MAC is requested
The emphasis is not mine, it is contained in THIS page on Thinkbroadband.

Doesn't this mean that the act of requesting a MAC should not result in a disconnection of the existing ISPs service.

Yes, until the MAC is properly applied and the supply transferred. If it is not properly applied, it may just be returned to them, so they would continue to supply.

Re: Been With Sky Nearly a Month - just got bill from old ISP !!!!

Ok - same thing happened to me!!!

Was with Virgin, got MAC and used it on 23rd March. Connected to SKY on 4th April - all ok. Phoned Virgin to see if my old account updated with disconnection - no, advised to call SKY as they have to inform Virgin.

Phoned SKY, told that as they have taken over my BB service, they would have informed Virgin 'ages ago'.

Called Virgin (account management this time) and was asked 'Is your new ISP SKY, by any chance?' - informed that SKY do not automatically cancel a customer's old ISP account and that the customer needs to do it themselves! - so was put back through to cancellations.

Nice guy at cancellations advised that they have not been informed and that if migration was to LLU, SKY will not actually use the MAC. He cannot put a manual cancellation through until the MAC has expired (and 'control' of the line is returned to them - even though their service isn't on the line anymore!) this is in case an ISP should attempt to use the MAC code - (There may be OFCOM issues if an ISP cancel an open MAC and then someone tries to use it??) 30 days after the MAC was issued, it will expire, then I can manually cancel my account which will take 5 days.
