      Package selection

Sorry if it's been covered before, but I can't see it anywhere.....

I'm with Eclipse, on their 'up to 8meg' service, at 18.99 p/m. Cost isn't a problem, but varying speed is. Sometimes 3.5 meg, other times same day/afternnon/morning, less than 1 meg. they've got a really smug attitude, saying there's nothing they can do unless it drops below a certain speed (boy, have I been close some days).

So, considered Be, as they offer ADSL2+, and my exchange is enabled. But then I remembered Sky.

Am I right in that, choosing the Max product, I should be getting ADSL2+ and therefore faster speeds? Base and Mid would be such speeds as I have now using the same service as with Eclipse?

I've noticed before that others have posted reported settings from their routers - I have a Speedtouch USB modem, which reports

      Upstream--------------Downstream
      Att 5.2 -------------13.4
      SNR 5 ------------- 6.5
      448000 -------------- 8128000

Like I say, fastest speed I ever get through the speed test at Thinkbroadband.com is about 3.5 meg. Am I likely to beat that with the Max offering from Sky?

Many thanks for even reading this far!!

You do not always get put on ADSL2+

Normally you get put on the best format for your line.

As for possible speeds I cannot predict, but you should get at least the same if not better than now for less money. Have you checked to see if you can get MAX?

This forum has over 300 posts a day and so sometimes posts get missed. However you have to appreciate people may just not know the answer to your questions.

Seems true enough - this is why some people may well be on the max package but still on ADSL1 (g-dmt) It's basically what's the best optimum speed your line can support without errors occurring?

Given the choice between an unstable downstream speed of 16Mb where am continuously getting drop-outs or A solid connection at 8Mb with no interuptions i know what i'd choose

Though i've only recently joined Sky Broadband my connection seems stable at 8Mb downstream as i've mentioned before only time will tell if my line can maintain this speed or not

      How is this decided ??

Are not all exchanges ADSL2+ ? And if so, how do check if my exchange is or is not ?

Is it dependant on your line stats ? If so which ones ? I read that an attenuation of more than 40db means you won't get ADSL2+ ?

If my current sync speed is less than 8Mb then I assume ADSL2+ wouldn't improve anything but if I was sync'ing at exactly 8Mb then it might worth trying ADSL2+ ??

I presume Sky do some kind of check on your line.

I have tried GDMT / ADSL2 / ADSL2+ and GDMT was the most stable for me.

Are they good/bad/indifferent/"best I'm going to get" ??

The mode says G.DMT so I assume it's not ADSL2+

Anything I can do to improve things ?
