The router blocks all incoming by default.

ZA can stop both in and out.

Re: ZoneAlarm causing connection to drop

I don't want to fall out with the most important person on the forum (scrape scrape, shuffle, bow, tug forelock ) but the router will only block 'unsolicited' incoming calls, if it blocked them all, it would not be much good.
Without a PF, like ZA, a call going out through the router, from a trojan for instance, would cause the router to accept an incoming call from a nastie as it would be seen as a request originating from the PC. This is really the only reason you need a PF, in fact if you are sure your PC is clean, all you need is a properly set up router. But this is a dangerous road to go down, with the amount of malware in the wild.

Regular checks on sites like THIS are essential.

EDIT- I have just had a look at the router firewall and it looks like I will have to grovel again It does say 'Block all incoming' but that is obviously not the case or it would not work

      ^^^ fair comment

Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single packet — solicited or otherwise — was received from your system as a result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very nice.

Re: ZoneAlarm causing connection to drop

Still having a few problems, big slow downs, can't access certain sites.
Turn ZA off and alls fine again.

On that Shields Up site, with ZA off, and windows firewall on, i get
      Solicited TCP Packets: PASSED
      Unsolicited Packets: PASSED
      Ping Reply: RECEIVED (FAILED)

      Hmm

Why not try another firewall. Comodo has received some good reports. ZA, although very good when it works, can be difficult to fix when it doesn't.

Re: ZoneAlarm causing connection to drop

Installed Comodo, and it definently seems quicker.
I still get Ping Reply received tho- Failed security test.

Re: ZoneAlarm causing connection to drop

Sorted now, the router was set to "Respond to PING on WAN port"
      So i unchecked that.
And now the shields up site says my connection is completely stealth

I used to use ZA Pro, but got fed up with it. I use Comodo now, seems pretty good, although does sometimes seem to "forget" app rules.
