problems with consistent packet loss when using 3rd party router - any advice appreciated

      Hi,

I have for some time always used my own router for my sky fibre, having fixed IP and the need for vpn inbound. At the start of september I started seeing consistent packet loss when looking at 2 external ping monitors. At times it was bad enough to completely lose all internet traffic even though there was no modem reysnc (I know due to monitoring via stats) so I thought ok I will get a new router as perhaps it was failing.

I was using an asus with merlin firmware. So swapped it over for an ac-88u but it was just as bad. In the mean time I had sky check out the network and other stuff which all came back as normal. There has never been a modem resync when these issues are happening.

So after trying 2 new asus routers running merlin firmware and still getting problems I carried out some basic tests to try and figure out what was happening as follows

8324 (as modem) + SR102 - no spikes or loss of session on 2 external monitors over a 41 hour period, no resyncs - must mean the 8324 as a modem is fine..
hg612 + sr102 no spikes or loss of session over a 41 hour period, no resyncs - all be it the hg612 syncing less probably being on eci cab..
sr102 as a modem and router - no spikes or loss of session over a 41 hour period, no resyncs

Regardless of which modem I use I get spikes with the rt-ac87u & 2 x rt-ac88u's (both new). Out of the three the latest rt-ac88u was much better than the first which suffered really bad and whilst the latest one is still getting tiny amount of consistent loss I can't understand why this is happening with the asus and not the sr102..

Maybe sky have changed someting at a network level or am I just unlucky with a duff batch of wan ports on the 2 routers I tried..(bit unlikely isnt it??), was never an issue till 5th september - had run this setup for months in the past with no issue.

Just a reminder the sr102 being used in wanoe mode is not having spikes or issues.

      Any thoughts appreciated.

i would be looking to replace that modem
with a vigor 130 or an eci openreach modem
if you are on an eci cab

      Hi Shonk.

My vmg 8324 is mct approved and I have tried an hg612. Same result.

      Thanks
