Which one? The Asus RT 87U or Netgear D7000 nighthawk. Confused!

I'm buying a router today and would like to ask which would be more suitable. I like the reviews and look of the Asus.

I have a Huawei cab and a Huawei open reach modem I can use if that is a better opting then using the built in modems.

I've been searching but have made my self more confused wether I would benefit from using the modem and which router is the better and easier to set up.

      Thanks in advance.

      Lee.

The D7000 is a combined modem/router and works out of the box with sky, no need for an OR modem. The AC87 is a router only and you will need a separate modem, you'll also need to flash it with Merlin or other.

My preference would be the AC87 and separate modem. I did have a D7000 for a while, great device but short on some features I needed.

Yup Asus all day long, not perfect, but best current solution out of all of them.

See my info above for the best solution, not for the faint hearted though.

Lol, yeah true, but not until they make a decent small NUC like box for it. Till then I'm happy with IPTables in the router.

Mines running on a pcengines box, very compact. New board now available with a quad core processor, although it's not needed for an 80Mbps link, maybe when we get 300Mbps I'll upgrade the board if the CPU load gets too high, so far I've never seen it over 5% even with full d/l saturation.
