Find out what your cab is and choose a modem or modem/router combo that matches.

I will not get into a debate over Broadcom on Huawaei or Lantiq on ECI cabs but there appears to be empirical evidence that it is the way to go.

Note, that at present there is no G.Inp on ECI cabinets so even if your modem supports it there will be no advantage.

      Absolutely...,

The best move I made was the HG612, pfSense and a cheapo 5G WAP, Now at 42 days and counting with no issues at all.
That sounds like an ideal setup. I am interested to have a go with pfsense but need to find something to run it on. I was thinking of a VM but don't know if you get a free version.

pfSense is free; you can subscribe if you want, that allows you to download the manuals, but to be honest there is so much info out there on the web you don't really need them.

It's the VMWare I am in need of. I know you could use Virtual Box but all the guide I see for pfsense virtualised and on VMWare and I'm not confident of setting up the virtual network side of things without a guide.

      Ah, I'm with you.

Or you could just invest in one one these, about the size of two packets of 20 cigs!

This is where I got mine from, in red though.

Only thing I added was a small 32Gb SSD, and I only got one that big (!) as it was dirt cheap.

What makes this very basic looking unit so expensive?

It hasn't even got an Apple logo on it.

That fact alone makes it better value to me.

Three Ethernet ports in a very compact unit, you'd love it.

No video ports though, so you have to be able to use a terminal, might be a tad complex for some..
