Intermittent high ping times to SR102

      Hi all

I'm having a strange issue with my Sky Fibre Pro and I wonder if anyone here can help me.

Over the last few months I've been generally unhappy with my Sky broadband. It's always "worked", but quite often my connection would seem to slow to a crawl, or I just wouldn't be able to do anything on the internet for a few minutes, but then it would come OK again. Up until now it hadn't been bad enough for me to really devote much time to investigate it.

Around two weeks ago I decided to start looking into it. I found that whenever the internet would slow to a crawl, the ping times to 192.168.0.1 would either go through the roof or they would just time out. For example, here's a reading I took a few minutes ago during the latest blip:

      Code:
      Jacks-MacBook:~ jack$ ping 192.168.0.1
      PING 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1): 56 data bytes
      Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
      Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
      Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
      64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=3466.465 ms
      64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=2488.250 ms
      64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=1487.495 ms
      64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=484.526 ms
      64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=4 ttl=64 time=1.614 ms
      64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=5 ttl=64 time=2.983 ms
      64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=6 ttl=64 time=2.179 ms
      64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=7 ttl=64 time=4.725 ms
      64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=8 ttl=64 time=3.562 ms
Around the same time as I started investigating, I noticed that the VDSL connection would frequently drop. I called Sky and a line test showed a fault. BTO came out the next day (4.5 hours late for their window, mind you) and replaced some stuff outside and the connection drops seem to have mostly stopped (although the connection did drop again this morning).

So, there might still be an issue with my phone line wiring somewhere - but would I be right in thinking that these high ping times will likely be separate from that? Even if there's an issue with my BT wiring, surely that wouldn't have an impact on pinging the SR102 router itself? Does anyone have any idea what could be causing such high ping times?

Finally, just a quick rundown of my network set up. For the last few months I've been using the SR102 as a VDSL modem and as a router, but with the wifi disabled. Connected to the SR102 is an Apple Airport Extreme, which has had its router functionality disabled in the settings, essentially making it just a wifi access point. All my devices are connected to the Airport by wifi. Today I disconnected the Airport and switched on wifi on the SR102 to see if it made a difference, but it seems to be exactly the same. I'll continue using wifi on the SR102 just to make sure everything is super simple for when I call Sky tomorrow, but good god is the wifi on this terrible or what?

Anyone got any idea what might be going on?

Do you use any cloud services such as iCloud or justcloud.com, if so Google search saturate my upload a as this may be something to check.

Thank Hedgehog - I had never heard of anything like this before. I run Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive Personal and OneDrive Enterprise on two computers so maybe that's it! I'll try disabling the lot for a while and see if that makes a difference.

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to have made a difference. I disabled all my cloud storage background processes on my two computers which have them and I'm still having the same issue :-(

simple run your ping on ethernet direct to sky router if same results then possible router issue if not you are picking up some sort of wifi interference

Have you tried changing the wifi channels?

Use Inssider2 to find your optimum channels.
