asus acrt router to replace sagem

Ok so I have decided to replace my Sagem router with an Asus still haven't decided on either 56 or 66 in the ac model. I'm not sure what the difference would be other than a slight increase in AC wireless.

seems to be some straightforward guides on the threads for setting this up with sky

Main reason for upgrade is gigabit ports for my gigabit homeplugs. Also I need to create a wireless bridge with and want the ac capability as bridge is ac enabled. Plus I have the option of doing this on the 5ghz band and keeping 2.4 for phones tablets etc.

However iv been sold on alot of the features asus advertises also.
Would like to try out attaching a usb3 drive for streaming. Could possibly replace my qnap nas.
Has downloading torrent features built in
      Media streaming
      Cloud based access
Built in vpn etc (currently pay for a service yearly)

      But

Will merlin firmware mean I dont have access to these features that asus advertise? (maybe a dealbreaker)

Anyone used any of the Asus features and services that could comment on how functional they are or if just gimmicky?

Can anyone comment on the use of networked USB drive for speed of access or issues?

Can it be setup with nfs (low overhead)

What is the coverage like on 56 vs 66?

Do I still need to use my openreach modem?

Any other info would be appreciated too. Off to ebay now to start snffing for one

Don't use it for streaming. Let a router be a router, get a dedicated nas for storage/media server

You will need an openreach modem. 66 has external twigs, so should give better coverage, although the 68 would be an even better bet as it is a newer model.

Read the merlin doc, there's info there about nfs etc.

well, i wasnt gonna get rid of the qnap just yet. but I would be interested in trying the asus out as a nas - just to see.
Im interested in the cloud access too. Need to sign up for ddns for my qnap - wonder if asus offer free service for it ( like the vpn)
gonna look into the merlin firmware more. seems to be same as the asus but just with more functionality. Am i right in assuming that it offers something asus doesn't with respect to handshaking with sky? Mer?

I have 68u it's a capable router/parental control device but the nas type features suck and can be temperamental.

Re: asus acrt router to replace sagem

Im not surprised to be honest. I did look into these router/nas options maybe 5 years ago and that was the general consensus then. BUt Imust admit these companies always seem to do a decent job of selling their products capabilities and potential. I fall for it anyway. Had kinda hoped that there might have been some progress since I last looked at it.

anyway have found a great ac bridge that gets decent reviews - will use to hook up an on demand sat box and an android kodi box.

Re: asus acrt router to replace sagem

The qnap's are very capable NAS units I also use one. When it comes to NAS QNAPS are far in advance of what any router can do, but they are useless as routers. . nuff said?

If you are contemplating that instead of the Asus, ensure it can support option61 required by Sky, Merlin can.

Re: asus acrt router to replace sagem

I use powerline for the NUC/KODI that I use and a Seagate 4TB NAS (tucked away in a cupboard) for a little extra storage as the NUC only has a 1TB secondary drive. The most useful feature of the latest Merlin is that you can assign a perm OpenVPN connection to the NUC which also kills the box's connection if it goes down. Great if you decide to use Genesis and similar addons. The Seagate NAS' are cheap and also have cloud access features if that is important to you, but they are dumbed down quite badly)

Ditto the use of poweline, if you have decent house wiring it's a better option than Wifi bridging, but get decent ones.
