Fibre barely faster than ADSL (low sync speed)

This is a discussion on Fibre barely faster than ADSL (low sync speed) within the Sky Broadband (Fibre) Help forums, part of the Sky Broadband help and support category; Had fibre installed Friday and the speed and latency doesn't seem to be any better than ADSL2+ . Here were ...

Fibre barely faster than ADSL (low sync speed)

Had fibre installed Friday and the speed and latency doesn't seem to be any better than ADSL2+ .

Here were my line stats before I had fibre installed:

      And with fibre:

      http://i.imgur.com/RXqn5Av.png?1

I was quoted 40Mbit from the BT checker and 30Mbit (minimum) from Sky.
DLM also seems to be kicking me off the line a lot, like 6-7 times per day.
Could this be a botched install? I notice my attenuation has actually increased with fibre
      Something seems odd..

      Any insight appreciated.

Re: Fibre barely faster than ADSL (low sync speed)

It looks like something has gone wrong somewhere. As you say your attenuation of Fibre is higher than it was with ADSL which suggests you are further from the cabinet than you were from the exchange, which is difficult to believe. I think the difference in speed is accentuated by the fact you were previously on a noise margin setting of 3 db, whereas now you are on 6 or 7db.

If your router has the updated firmware, that could be the reason for the drop outs, it may not be DLM at work. If you have the 2.88.1086.R firmware it is almost definitely the problem reported by others on the forum.

The fact you are not getting even the minimum speed quoted by Sky means you have a good case to have it fixed or return to your ADSL.

Re: Fibre barely faster than ADSL (low sync speed)

Don't know what happened to my original post, maybe flagged as spam because I used some imgur links to my line stats, oh well?!

Anyway to quickly recap, had adsl2+ before, line was great almost 20mbit which is pretty decent.
Went to fibre last Friday and am now getting only 23Mbit, which seems a bit low as Sky quoted me 30Mbit minimum. Also the BT line checker said 44Mbit.

Here's my line stats before and after fibre.
These are "sync speeds" btw, not affected by wifi.

      ADSL2+
Connection Speed 19887 kbps 1295 kbps
Line Attenuation 18.5 dB 11.3 dB
Noise Margin 2.2 dB 4.4 dB

      Fibre
Connection Speed 23441 kbps 4542 kbps
Line Attenuation 23.5 dB 0.0 dB
Noise Margin 6.3 dB 6.6 dB

@Isitme - Thanks for the reply. Managed to get a BT engineer visit organised for this afternoon so hopefully they will be able to give some more insight.

Re: Fibre barely faster than ADSL (low sync speed)

Quick update: the engineer arrived, checked all the equipment, fitted a VDSL plate and reset DLM.
Speed immediately bumped from 23Mbit to 32Mbit.

Seems my local cabinet is outside the exchange so is a bit longer than normal, but happy with this speed anyway

Re: Fibre barely faster than ADSL (low sync speed)

I rather thought your line was an EO which was then updated to a cabinet outside the exchange to allow FTTC. This means there should have been very little change in your attenuation. Unlike others where the copper length is much reduced, your copper is much the same. Has your attenuation went back under 20db?

It indeed was an exchange only line with a cabinet installed outside the exchange recently which explains the higher attenuation. The engineer explained this.
I was actually closer to the exchange without a cabinet, which is weird. I guess the underground wiring runs differently to the cabinet hence a longer line.

Anyway 32Mbit is better than it was and latency has lowered a lot in online games.

Something strange there. The line attenuation is now 2dB worse than before the engineers visit.
