Angry Wired connection - Slower than expected.

      Hello,

I upgraded to sky fiber broadband unlimited, connection date was 13 days ago now. My speeds are lower than I would have hoped for.

I decided to ask here for some advice on why my speeds might be lower than expected, I'm yet to ring sky and ask for their help!

      My router connection stats

Wired connection - Slower than expected.-bb-stats.jpg

      My speed test results

Wired connection - Slower than expected.-bb-speed-results.jpg

I'm running an i5 laptop with windows 10, wired connection to the router/hub (SR102) with sky's yellow cable.
I've turned wifi off on the router for the purpose of these tests in case they would change the results some how.

Any help/advice/suggestions would be welcome. I have tried speed tests at various times of day in case network congestion was an issue but with no improvement.

      thanks
      Jon

You're syncing at 40Mbps which is the max for your package, SNR looks good, I'd give my left little toe for an SNR like that!

What does an OOKLA speed test give you?

Are you sure nothing else is using the connection? Try this, leave the wireless disabled, plug one PC into the router, restart in Safe Mode with Networking. Repeat the speed-test on at least 3 different testers and post the results. On Speedtest.net use London, Structured Communications for the best result.

      Ok,

did as above, tried quite a few speed test sites with results as below.

      28.9
      29.7
      29.8
      30.6
      33.07
      33.2
      36

      which.co.uk speed checker

      40.47
      49.34?

speeds listed in speed order all run within a few minutes of each other.

just ran more tests with windows booted normaly

      which.co.uk
      31.02

      speedtest.net - London structured communications
      25.84

Which UK appears to be using the speedcheckercdn element, same as BroadbandSpeedchecker. it usually shows faster speeds than reality. My sync speed is 71.6Mb, my dl speed is shown in my sig, about 4Mbps less. I would be expecting to see somwhere around 37 to 38Mbps on a 40 line. What was the Ping time on those tests, did you note them?

I think that your results show you have something running in the background using up your bandwidth. One way to detect what it is using your connection is to open the Resources Monitor. In Win 7 fastest way is to press Win key and type resmon, click the icon. This will show everything that is using up resources in your PC, including the Network.

A more sophisticated application is Capsa, which you can download free here- Capsa Free Network Analyzer (Packet Sniffer) - Colasoft

Not the Task Manager, that gives little information, you must bring up the Resources Monitor(in Normal Mode) which gives you a pane like this-

Wired connection - Slower than expected.-resmon.jpg

Give it a few minutes to run and it shows everything using your connection.
